Using Newsletter V/S Email Marketing for Your Coaching Business

Email marketing is one of the most misunderstood topics by life coaches.

Also, email marketing is not equal to sending newsletters.

Email marketing is “marketing” and sending newsletters is “content distribution”.

The end goals are quite different too.

The end goal of email marketing is to sell.

The end goal of sending a newsletter is to stay in touch or keep your subscriber informed/updated.

If you’re doing email marketing, you can do drip campaigns using automation, to eventually sell something, or upsell or cross-sell something else.

Sending a newsletter is all about sending a broadcast email to your list. That’s it.




3 Reasons to send newsletters as a coach

  • The biggest reason — your subscribers won’t miss out on your content due to social media algorithms if they’re subscribed to your newsletter.
  • It’s super simple and easy. You’d need 10min a week to do this, in addition to whatever else you’re doing in your marketing.
  • The newsletters will help you create a relationship with new subscribers over a period of time, without being pushy or inauthentic.




I recently switched from email marketing to newsletters too

The more I bring authenticity to my business, the more transparency I intend to put out.


The thought behind a lead magnet is — I give you something, and in return, you give me your email. I’ll use the email to send you newsletters every week.

This way, you also get added to an automated email sequence.

You know what I’m talking about.

Choosing a newsletter platform

The most popular email marketing platforms in the market right now are Convertkit, Mailerlite, Mailchimp, etc.


From my experience, the best and most convenient platform for sending newsletters for a coach is?Substack .

Plus, it’s free forever.

My suggestion? Go to substack and launch your weekly newsletter.




Creating newsletters with ease

Imply a simple strategy for your weekly newsletters.


Use them to —

  • compile your best content from the previous week.
  • announce any new offers or programs.
  • create personal relationships.




Other important recommendations

  1. You don’t need to copy-paste all of your content from the previous week. Write a short summary, or put up the introductions only. Keeping it short and sweet.
  2. Use the bottom 2–3 lines to mention your offer/programs. Try to keep selling as minimal as possible in your newsletters.
  3. Reply to as many email responses as you can from your newsletters. It will help you build stronger relationships with your audience.
  4. Consider this as a long-term game, like your coaching business. Be slow, steady, and consistent in sending your weekly newsletter.
  5. Once a week is a sweet spot for sending newsletters. Not more, not less.
