Did you know there is actually a science around beginnings. That’s why we have? quarterly goals, new year’s resolutions. That's why more people start training to run a marathon as they turn 30, or 40, or 50?? All of these things have beginnings, and create a space for us to start fresh.? last? quarter really sucked for me.? Business was way down, I got sick twice, I was behind on all of my todo lists, the weather absolutely stunk.? But guess what,? April 1st marked the beginning of a new month, a new quarter, a new chance for things to go better., a fresh start.??
Danial Pink talks about beginnings and endings?and how timing can be so instrumental in our physical and emotional success in his book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.? I have learned to use these beginnings as personal fresh starts and also to begin things with my team at a beginning and not an end.? I have also learned the importance of endings, otherwise known as deadlines. Did you know that people are 24% more likely to do something if there is a deadline.? Not only that, but when you set the deadline can also be key.? Studies show that whether you give yourself or your team a week to do something or a month, they will earnestly get started exactly halfway into the amount of time given.? If we give ourselves 4 weeks to plan a new campaign, build a new fence, or clean out the garage, it is scientifically proven that we won’t really put any effort into it for 2 weeks.? Then we will do most of the work in a burst of productivity and leave a tiny bit left to do right before the deadline, and if we don't have a deadline we are likely not to complete the project at all.?
Timing is everything. We have libraries full of books on HOW To do things, but it is also important to think about WHEN to do things, if we want to be successful.? BTW.? If you didnt get everything you wanted to get done this month, that’s ok.? Put it on the list for this month, and give it a deadline.
