Using a fire extinguisher

Using a fire extinguisher

  1. Activate the Safety Pin: Pull the safety pin or remove the tamper seal to activate the extinguisher.
  2. Aim Low: Point the nozzle of the extinguisher at the base of the fire, not the flames. Remember, "Aim Low, Point High."
  3. Sweep the Nozzle: Sweep the nozzle from side to side, moving the extinguisher in a sweeping motion to cover the base of the fire.
  4. Stand Back: Stand a safe distance away from the fire while using the extinguisher. Ensure you have a clear escape route.
  5. Use the PASS Technique: Remember the PASS acronym to help you remember the steps:
  6. Check and Retreat: After using the extinguisher, check to see if the fire has been extinguished. If not, retreat to a safe area and call the fire department immediately.
  7. After Use: After using the extinguisher, call the fire department to report the incident and have the extinguisher recharged or replaced.

Remember, safety always comes first. Only use a fire extinguisher if you feel it is safe to do so and you have been trained in its proper use. If the fire is too large or spreading rapidly, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.
