Friday FAQ: I'm so proud of my new book. Do you recommend that I publish excerpts to market it?
A. You could. But press pause first. Don't chop up your book to publish chapters or excerpts until you loop in your publisher.
Once a piece is published, another publication won't accept it.
Your publisher will want to place excerpts as part of the marketing plan. They may want your partnership in placing the pieces.
So you would be missing your opportunity to work with your publisher to be selective about the timing and the audiences being reached.
Instead, write complimentary pieces - essays or articles related to your book's message and theme, but not direct excerpts.
With this, you'll be marketing yourself and your knowledge/perspective, not just the book.
Sincerely,
Allison Lane
