Good to know the OB Crew: Christoph -the Founder - and my business partner. Oyster Bay is a great team. That's why I'm now introducing someone from our team every week. Starting with our founder?Christoph Miller. I got to know Christoph when I was still a founder myself and in the middle of setting up purefood. He was one of the first people to invest in me. As part of the advisory board at purefood, he allowed me to benefit from his extensive knowledge and over 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur in the food and beverage sector. But there were also moments when we negotiated against each other. When it came to selling the company, he was negotiating on behalf of Oyster Bay and I negotiated on behalf of my company. Through this, our mutual respect grew: I learned during this time that tough negotiations can be a good foundation for a business relationship. A foundation that was ideally suited to embarking on a common path. After we had sold purefood (to the satisfaction of Christoph and his investors), and I left the company a bit later, Christoph called me. What I personally really appreciate about Christoph: He's always about the cause and not about his ego (a rarer quality in the business world than you might think). His track record is also impressive. His gut feeling and the fact that he very often has the right instinct when it comes to founders is a fantastic asset for Oyster Bay. I believe this combination makes him a unique investor. 25+ years of operational expertise and now over 8 years as an investor. I got to know him as an investor and he was one of the ones who knew what they were talking about. Grateful to support the startup world with him and the rest of the?Oyster Bay?crew! The picture is from an offsite we did to work on Strategy back in 2019. And now a Q&A: You ask something about Oyster Bay or about me and I'll answer – in the comments. #OysterBay #VentureCapital #Investor #Founder #Startup

Some food for thought for your weekend... Dippin' Dots, LLC makes me very nostalgic for summers spent on the Great Lakes and going to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. The flash-frozen ice cream is so fun and delicious. Dippin’ Dots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011. Scott Fischer, who purchased Dippin’ Dots out of bankruptcy in 2012, started noticing there was interest from businesses who wanted to use the company’s flash-frozen process. Dippin Dots created other revenue streams that have helped it financially as sales to theme parks and other venues dried up during the coronavirus pandemic. You can find Dippin Dots frozen fat globules (yep!) in plant-based meats such as Beyond Meat, and they have also used their high-volume cryogenic freezing in pharmaceuticals, probiotics, and animal feed. I loved this story! It has it all: nostalgia, a failing business, a PIVOT, innovation, and a really ingenious strategy to use brand equity to capture new markets. On Angel Investors Ontario's Knowledge Hub, we have a course titled "Building Great Products" with Shawn Hewat from Wavy. In this session, Shawn discusses product development, product market fit at different stages of your startup, going through a pivot, and how to validate fundraising along the way. Crispy Green celebrated another significant milestone yesterday – the 20th anniversary of the founding of the company. For most entrepreneurs, just this would be seen as a major achievement. No question that I am proud of what we have achieved, but I feel especially gratified that I have done this on my own terms. Every entrepreneur knows how difficult it is to start a company, and even more challenging to make it a sustainable and growing the brand year over year, and to do so without outside influence (money). I started Crispy Green in August 2004 with a simple vision to provide wholesome, better-for-you and convenient snacks to the world. With no experience in running a business, let alone a CPG company, I knew that I would have a long and steep learning curve. From day one, I knew boots-trapping was my only option. So, I dug in, focused all my energy on doing everything I needed to do to grow the fledgling business instead of spending time looking for inventors. Using my own resources, including borrowing money from friends and family, to sustain the business in the first few years until we turned profitable. It was not easy and took a lot of gumption and sacrifices, but I did it! And I learned a great deal along the way. To teach myself how to create a brand and make it sustainable has always been one of my main goals for having my own company. Almost all founders start with an idea and a vision, but to translate that idea and vision into a successful CPG brand requires sound strategies, persistent executions, unwavering commitment and patience. I’m happy to say that Crispy Green, 20 years in, has become the leading brand in the freeze-dried fruit snack category and is still going strong. That to me is the unmeasurable reward that I dreamt of 20 years ago! ?? #entrepreneurship #freezedriedfruit #crispygreen

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending Boxseat’s Live EIS Investment Pitch Event in Manchester. Hosted by Roger Wade of Boxfund VC, we got to listen to pitches from 3 leading startups with a purpose: ? Maeving (Will Stirrup): Hands down the best looking EV I’ve ever seen. Maeving’s motorcycles promote clean commuting with sleek 1950s design flare, inspired by the likes of BSA and Triumph Motorcycles Limited. Most importantly however, this is a sustainable business operating with strong unit economics, right here in the UK. ??? ? Nuud | Plastic Free Gum (Keir Carnie): Plastic free chewing gum which tastes and lasts just like regular gum, and which decomposes at the same pace as a banana. Did you know that most pieces of chewing gum contain more plastic than an entire drinking straw? The health & environmental benefits plus the quality of the product, have converted me into a proud Nuudist. ?? ? Reboxed? (Phil Kemish): Last but by no means least, it was great to hear the latest update from Phil at Reboxed. Through their ‘circularity as a service’ proposition, they’re extending the life of connected devices, providing consumers with an affordable, sustainable and trusted alternative to new. I’ve known Phil and Matt since Reboxed was just getting started, and I love what they're doing. ?? Besides the pitches, we also got to hear from leading entrepreneurs and investors, such as Roger Wade, Tom Bloxham (Urban Splash) and Kevin Shone (Artorius). It’s always important for entrepreneurs to get perspective from experts in fundraising. Running a business and raising capital are a different ball games, and getting steer from some of the best in the business is invaluable. 2hrs very well spent! Thank you to the organisers and to everyone who participated for putting on a great event ???? #growth #capital #funding #entrepreneurship #learning #investors #founders #development #fundraising #scale #automotive #circularity #products #services

That is why I am sending out a gentle nudge. Let’s start doing things differently together. Who’s up for it? #circulareconomy #change #sustainability #positiveimpact #systemshift

Navigating the entrepreneurial journey is akin to steering a ship through tumultuous seas. At LeafyPack, we embarked not from the starting line but from a challenging deficit, propelling us into a relentless pursuit of success. This journey demanded unwavering dedication, an intimate understanding of our clients' needs, and a steadfast commitment to authenticity. Building trust with clients and industry peers wasn't just a goal; it was a necessity. Our identity, our very essence, became intertwined with our mission, guiding us to create something genuinely remarkable. Reflecting on those days, I'm reminded of the relentless effort required to carve out our space in the industry. Observing a new entity entering our arena with less vigor and an unclear identity brings these memories into sharp focus. It's disheartening to witness companies using underhanded tactics, such as appropriating our imagery and masquerading under false pretenses, to mislead diligent businesses. These actions not only undermine the industry's integrity but also highlight the stark contrast between genuine dedication and superficial attempts at success. At LeafyPack, our journey has been about more than just surviving; it's been about establishing a legacy of trust, quality, and authenticity. To those embarking on their entrepreneurial voyage, remember that the strength of your identity and the trust you build are your most invaluable assets. Let's strive for an industry where integrity and genuine effort define success, not shortcuts and deception.
