Using Corporate Level Security Strategies at Home

Using Corporate Level Security Strategies at Home

In a world where violence, crime, and other type of threats can be found in almost every environment (work, home, public places), safety and security is an important notion that should start at home.  This can be accomplished by simply being aware of all threats and vulnerabilities as well as by implementing security and safety measures that prepare your facility to appropriately respond to any emergency situation.

Although “corporate level security” could be a synonym of expensive tools and services, there are many cost effective measures that can be used at home with little to no money needed. Here are a couple of suggestions that could help you make your home a safer and less vulnerable place for your family:

  1. Awareness, Awareness, Awareness: The first and most important step is to be aware of the environment you live in and the natural and exterior threats you home is vulnerable to. Whether it is crime or a natural disaster, every member of your family is should know these threats and how to respond to them.
  2. Planning and Preparation: as any Fortune500 company would, plan and prepare to respond to any emergency. Create and practice evacuation plans, gather vital supplies (food, first aid supplies), designate a meeting place, create an emergency contact list, monitor weather conditions. All these steps can be implement by using regular home supplies and do not require any additional expenses.
  3. Delegation: after creating a plan, it is also crucial to delegate roles and responsibility to each member of your family. These responsibilities will encourage you to rely on each other and will promote accountability.
  4. CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) Fundamentals: this will be one of the only implementation were you’ll need to invest some time and money into. CPTED is the combination of physical security measures used to protect you house and make it a less vulnerable target for crime. These physical security measures range from your home’s landscape, exterior lighting, and door locks to perimeter demarcation and “No Trespassing” signs. By implementing these recommendations, your home’s sense of ownership will increase and the likelihood of being a target for crime will decrease.

Applying this type of mentality when it comes to home safety and security might seem overwhelming and unnecessary at first, but you must never forget you are protecting you most valuable possession, your life.
