Using CompuCal to confirm the accuracy of your PUE

Using CompuCal to confirm the accuracy of your PUE

One of most critical numbers in the effective management of data center operations is the PUE number or Power Usage Effectiveness. The ideal number for this value is 1 and there are many different formulas and calculations used to get to this value. Pretty much all of the data used in these calculations and formulas comes from your measuring instruments, the accuracy of your measuring instruments will determine the accuracy of your calculated PUE number. The only way to truly know the accuracy of your measuring instruments is with a tightly managed regular calibration management program. Typical data centers will have between 300 to 1100 measuring points depending on it's size. And if you have a large number of data centers in different geographical locations then effectively managing calibrations starts to become very difficult.

It does not matter how new your instruments are or how shiny they are when replaced, an incorrect installation could cause them to drift. Many Data Center operators use simple task scheduling tools to manage their large installed base of calibrations and using manual excel sheets or just paper to record the results. Basically putting a lot of effort into recording calibration results but with no value from all of the data entry effort.

Using a dedicated Calibration Management System like CompuCal will reduce your data entry time, standardise processes, generic procedures and ensure that you can measure the accuracy of your complete installed base of instruments. If you want more details on how we are helping Global Data Center operators to reduce their operating costs, reduce the PUE number and save on energy costs get in touch.
