Gratitude. That's a word that has been getting thrown around a lot lately. We see it in many different contexts:

  • Mental Health Advocates
  • Entrepreneurs
  • CEO's talking about it
  • Your pastor
  • You read in self-help books

But what does gratitude actually look like on a daily basis? How can we actually put it into practice in our lives? I've struggled with this very thing for a number of years. The main challenges for me were:

  • Inconsistency
  • Impatience
  • Lack of priority
  • Forcing it

Then I decided to audit the reasons I was feeling like this. I recognized 2 important things: the inconsistency came from my attempt to overdeliver (I would sit down and try to meditate on gratitude, then follow that with a written exercise...it was just too much)

The second issue was a writer's block problem...I was trying to make it sound so good and meaningful every time, it kinda became a burden to just come up with stuff everyday.

So this was my solution (I actually got this from "Tools of Titans" by Tim Ferriss )

I would simply write 3 things I was grateful for, usually 1st thing in the morning while I was drinking my coffee. And I followed this basic structure:

  • 1 super basic thing I'm grateful for (I have electricity)
  • 1 big picture thing I'm grateful for (I'm alive)
  • 1 optimism/seize the day thing I'm grateful for (I get to write a newsletter today)

This exercise has really helped me stay consistent with my practice of gratitude and I've notice a tangible effect it has on my level of patience and forgiveness, especially around my loved ones.

If you've always wanted to get into the practice of giving gratitude, try this method and let me know if it works for you as well as it does for me.

Thanks for stopping by. If you find this helpful in any way, please share as that helps me a lot ??
