Using ChatGPT: Harnessing AI for Novel and Useful Value Creation
ChatGPT is a revolutionary tool that seemingly transformed how many thought about machine learning and automation overnight. It has incredibly powerful implications for almost every field and how we think about the future. However, while many are fearful about whether AI will take their jobs, to echo the wisdom expressed by Dave Waters, “AI won’t take your job, someone using AI will”.
Large Language Models have many strengths and exceptional use cases. However, many misuse them or have flawed understandings of how they can best leverage these tools to create novel and useful value.
Novel and Useful Creations
In the age of machine learning and automation, creative problem solving is an increasingly valuable skill. Finding creative and novel solutions to complex problems is currently a uniquely human skill, but AI tools can enhance your ability to do this. Here are ways that I use AI to enhance my ability to create.
Ways to Enhance Yourself with ChatGPT
Writing Prompts or Questions
Sometimes if you are facing writer's block it can be helpful to ask ChatGPT to generate a list of questions that people may have around the topic you are discussing. Especially if you are writing about a novel concept, feeding ChatGPT what you have so far and asking where readers may get confused or want additional information can help you know which points may need more elaboration.
Example Prompts
Given my explanation of X concept, what are some questions readers might have?
Which concepts or points in my article could use more elaboration or explanation?
Outlines
If you are working on a project that has a specific purpose such as writing a program outline, persuasive essay or research article it can be helpful to use a generated outline to structure your project. For example, when writing my project for the WEquil School Program I initially asked ChatGPT what I should include in an article with a comprehensive overview of a new program. This helped me to ensure that I included all the necessary information new members may want to know when learning more about our program.
Example Prompts
I am writing a research article, please create an outline I can follow to ensure I cover all the necessary aspects of the question I’m answering.
References
Adding in relevant quotes and statistics can not only aid in your communication but add credibility to what you are saying. ChatGPT can help guide you towards these related references through a simple prompt. Of course, these will need to be fact checked but it can be helpful to know what resources are out there that can help you communicate.

Example Prompt
Suggest 10 quotes and 10 different statistics that I can reference in this article that would help me communicate my points: [INSERT ARTICLE CONTENTS]
Visuals
Along with quotes and statistics visuals can greatly aid in how engaging it is to read your project. ChatGPT can aid in either generating images or coming up with ideas for images that would be helpful and relevant.
Example Prompt
Suggest 20 image ideas that would help me communicate the points from this article: [INSERT ARTICLE CONTENTS]
Vocabulary
If you find yourself repeatedly using certain words you can ask ChatGPT for alternatives that would make reading your article less redundant. This can also be helpful if you are writing a creative story to help with more visually stimulating language to help your readers picture the scenes you are describing.
Understanding the Consensus
Before writing an article you probably want to understand the standing consensus or common view around the topic you are covering. This can help you better understand the viewpoint your readers are most likely coming from and address the potential concerns or disagreements they may have. Because ChatGPT is trained on all the data from the internet it will be better at accurately portraying the opinions and viewpoints that are most prevalent which can be leveraged in this way.
Critique
ChatGPT can be a great proofreader or to outline which aspects of your article are the least polished. There are several different prompts you can use for this.
Review this article and provide an outline of which areas are most confusing.
Review this article and provide the ten sentences that are the most poorly worded and suggest better wording for them.
