Using ChatGPT to Create Personalized Interview Questions - Must Read!

Okay, so, ChatGPT is the hot topic in January 2023! So, let's talk about how to leverage the heck out of this tool as a recruiter.

For those of you who may have missed the ChatGPT train so far, let me catch you up with what's been happening since the beginning of December 2022. ChatGPT is a computer program that can understand and respond to written language like a human can, it's a type of AI called a language model. It is trained to understand and generate human-like text by using a technique called deep learning and a large dataset of text. The dataset is used to learn the patterns and structures of human language, and now it can generate new text that is similar to the examples it was trained on. It can be used to generate text on a wide range of topics and also fine-tuned for specific tasks such as answering questions, creating summaries, or even writing creative fiction. It's like a robot that can understand and respond to human language and it can be used in many applications such as chatbots, language translation, and writing assistants.

Now, I have to say that there's a ton of different things recruiters can use this tool for, however, let's talk about just 1 for right now, which is the interview process - specifically with interviewing questions. We all know that the interview process is an essential part of recruiting, as it provides valuable information about a candidate's qualifications and experience to help us determine if the candidate is a good fit for the position in which we are seeking to fill. Usually, most recruiters have a set list of questions that they ask every candidate, seldomly deviating from that list of questions (I'm guilty of that - don't judge). Now, before any of you write me and all other recruiters off as lazy, there's a reason why we typically approach interviews this way. It's because many of us interview multiple people each day (20-45 mins each), so, creating a list of personalized interview questions for each candidate would normally become too time-consuming and challenging (if we recruiters want to maintain our sanity and the ability to make it to the end of the day).

So, here's what I recommend. Let's run a little experiment together! Let's try to see if ChatGPT can enable us to do the impossible. Let's try using it to, first, create personalized interview questions for each candidate for a few days, and then, let's switch to trying out the same thing for each position (instead of each candidate). And yes, I know, I know... we already do this for each position, but, perhaps check to see if ChatGPT can come up with questions you may not have thought of before. Challenge the system you've created to see if there's room for improvement. You may just discover that there are questions you never thought of that could enhance the experience for you, the candidate, and the hiring managers/stakeholders you work with.

At last, here's the guide! This guide will walk you through the process of using ChatGPT to generate personalized interview questions, how to review and select the most relevant questions, and how to integrate them into the interview process to hopefully increase efficiency and effectiveness.

If ChatGPT had a voice, this is when I'd imagine you would hear it say "Hold my beer!"

Using ChatGPT to Generate Personalized Interview Questions 'Job Specific'

  1. Start by carefully reviewing the job description and identifying the key qualifications and requirements you need to see in the ideal candidate for the position. Make a list of these qualifications and requirements, and get ready to copy and paste those suckers into ChatGPT.
  2. Use the list you made of qualifications and requirements as a starting point to generate a list of potential interview questions. For example, if the job description lists experience with a specific programming language as a requirement, you could ask ChatGPT to generate probing questions around the language and the possible answers to expect from those questions. (Always test the questions and get feedback from other recruiters and hiring managers to make sure the questions are effective in identifying the best candidate for the job - while this is kind of the wild west using ChatGPT, you still owe it to your stakeholders to be great at your job - don't get lost spending hours on this tool because you're having too much fun, exploring the possibilities).
  3. Once you have a final list of custom, ChatGPT-generated interview questions, use them during the interview process to assess the candidate's qualifications and experience in a more targeted and efficient way.
  4. Keep in mind that the questions should be job-related and appropriate, and should not discriminate based on protected characteristics.
  5. Also, remember that the questions should be designed to gather information about the candidate's qualifications, skills, experience, and work habits in a way that is relevant to the specific role.

Using ChatGPT to Generate Personalized Interview Questions for 'Candidates'

  1. First, input parts of the candidate's resume and qualifications into ChatGPT. This can be done by using a pre-existing resume parsing tool or by manually copying and pasting from the candidate's resume.
  2. Next, instruct ChatGPT to generate a list of personalized interview questions for the candidate based on their qualifications and experience. For example, if a candidate has experience with a specific programming language or technology, ChatGPT can generate questions about their experience and proficiency with that language or technology.
  3. Review the generated questions and select the most relevant and appropriate ones for the candidate. (Again, we are in new territory, people! You might just get complete hogwash from the AI, but time will tell).
  4. Once you have a final list of personalized interview questions, you can decide which ones to use during the interview process to assess the candidate's qualifications and experience in a more targeted and efficient way (hopefully...)
  5. Additionally, you can use the generated questions as a starting point to create follow-up questions, in case the candidate's answer requires more details or a deeper understanding of their experience.

?? And remember this, ChatGPT is new and is improving every week it seems. So, even if you find that it's not as helpful as you hoped, remember that tools like these typically get better over time. And, if you don't get the desired result the first time, try rewording your questions. Look up videos on YouTube on how to best operate the technology, and then make your judgement on whether the tool will work well for you or not. Who knows, maybe this will be the revolution you never knew you needed that will save you time and improve the efficiency of your interview process, while providing more detailed and accurate information about the candidate's qualifications and experience.

It's also important to note that, while ChatGPT can help you generate personalized interview questions, it's crucial to always keep in mind the legal and ethical considerations of the recruitment process. Make sure that the questions you ask do not discriminate based on protected characteristics, and always ensure that the questions are job-related and appropriate.

By following these steps, you can use ChatGPT to generate a list of personalized interview questions that are tailored to the specific job or specific to the candidate's background, hopefully, making the interview process more efficient, effective, and accurate.

I've started using ChatGPT for creative Copywriting. As recruiters it can be challenging coming up with captivating messages for candidates you are trying to recruit. ChatGPT normally does not give a perfect answer, but it's excellent for giving you ideas how to capture people's attention. It's like having another person brainstorming with you in the room. Total gamechanger for sales outreach as well :-)
