Managing Frustration and Anger:
Number 1: Understanding Frustration ?? Frustration can be a significant barrier to playing at your full potential. At its core, frustration is the inability to accept reality as it is, especially because whatever is occurring (reality) may not match up to what one prefers to happen—whether it’s being scratched from the lineup or turning over the puck. However, frustration is also a data point; it indicates that you care, which is a positive sign.
Why It Matters: Your relationship with frustration impacts how you handle subsequent shifts and ultimately influences your performance. Recognizing frustration as a sign of investment can help you channel it productively rather than letting it undermine your game.
Strategy: Help players identify and acknowledge their frustration. Encourage them to see it as a sign of their commitment and use it to fuel their focus and determination in the game.
Number 2: Navigating Anger ?? Anger, like frustration, can hinder optimal performance depending on how it is managed. Some players find that expressing anger—such as breaking a stick—can be cathartic and enhance their subsequent performance. For instance, Novak Djokovic often breaks tennis rackets and then plays exceptionally well.
Healthy Expression: Anger needs to be expressed in a healthy and productive way. It’s not inherently negative and can be harnessed to improve performance.
Strategy: Teach players to recognize when their anger is working against them. If expressing anger in certain ways helps them reset and refocus, it can be beneficial. However, if it detracts from their game, they need to develop strategies to manage it constructively.
Reframe Anger: Anger is a tool that can be used to enhance performance, if done so in the right way. When managed well, it can drive players to play with greater intensity and purpose. Because anger is an emotion and all emotions are data, they signal to us what matters.
