Using AI at Work? It Might Not Be as Safe as You Think
AI at work is transforming the business landscape, offering groundbreaking tools and efficiencies. However, new technology comes with risks—bad actors are eager to exploit it.
After attending IT Nation, one of the largest industry networking conferences, we came away with a wealth of insights. A central theme of the event was AI’s disruptive power, both positive and negative. Let’s focus on the risks to help you better protect your business.
The Future is Here—But Are We Ready?
Bryson Medlock, Threat Intelligence Director at ConnectWise, shared some staggering statistics that highlight how AI is changing the game for cybercriminals:
These aren’t Hollywood-style, nation-state hackers. They’re everyday people exploiting weaknesses in small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). With tools like WormGPT, FraudGPT, and PoisonGPT, the chances of a phishing attack have increased by a shocking 1000%.
A Chilling Tale of AI Fraud
Medlock also shared a real-life example that underscores the dangers of AI-driven fraud.
A job seeker applied for a position through LinkedIn, went through several rounds of interviews via phone and video, and ultimately accepted the offer. The onboarding process seemed standard, requiring paperwork and direct deposit forms.
But this was no ordinary employer. The entire recruitment process—right down to the phone calls and video interviews—was conducted using deepfake technology. Once the job seeker submitted their information, their life savings were drained.
This sobering story is a reminder that cybercriminals are leveraging AI in highly sophisticated ways.
How to Stay Safe
AI isn’t going anywhere, and while it offers incredible opportunities for SMBs, vigilance is critical. Here are steps you can take to protect your business when using AI at work:
