Using AI to disguise identities, and more from This Week in 3D

Here’s the most interesting news from this week in 3D:

Using AI to disguise identity

Footage from the "Welcome to Chechnya" (2020) trailer showing a fake identity

Rather than subjecting viewers to 2 hours of blurry faces, the documentary of “Welcome to Chechnya” used a technique called “facial veiling” to swap real faces with the faces of volunteers. So the person being filmed can remain anonymous, but viewers can still read their facial expression. Ingenius solution to a problem that has plagued TV for decades.

After Effects finally improved it’s color management!

The Lego Movie (2014) was the first CG feature to use ACES color management

Version 23.2 supports OCIO, meaning you can now grade and composite natively in the industry standard ACES pipeline. Great news for people who want to keep their edits in the Adobe suite without having to jump to Nuke or Davinci for their grading.

Substance Designer has won an Oscar

DNEG used Substance 3D for it's work on First Man (2018)

Well-deserved considering how much it's revolutionized 3D asset production in VFX.

And finally a shameless plug from me...
