USHA Events
We are excited to announce our Regional Hydrogen Policy Leaders Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! This one-day event is set to host a dynamic gathering of policymakers at all government levels, leading hydrogen companies, and USHA members.
?? Date and Location: August 15th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a reception August 14th.
?? Why Pennsylvania? With the northeast and Appalachian area of the United States being selected for two federally funded hydrogen hubs (ARCH2 and MACH2), we felt it was a pivotal location to host our first regional event. These hubs will not only help meet carbon emission goals, but stimulate economic growth and job creation across the region.
?? What to Expect: An exclusive opportunity to shape the policy framework for the hydrogen economy in the upcoming year. Attendees will engage in meaningful discussions to forge and deepen partnerships between the hydrogen industry and government representatives, propelling forward the integration of hydrogen into the national energy landscape.

Casey, Colleagues Urge Biden Administration to Change Proposed Hydrogen Production Tax Credit
U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and 12 Senate colleagues have urged Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to update guidance on the 45V tax credit to better support Pennsylvania businesses. The Senators seek to expand the eligible sources of hydrogen energy for the tax credit, ensuring that Pennsylvania’s workers and communities can benefit from hydrogen investments. They argue that the proposed guidance should align with the intent of the Inflation Reduction Act to maximize job creation and emission reductions. Senator Casey emphasizes the importance of this opportunity for boosting economic competitiveness, creating jobs, and enhancing energy security. Pennsylvania, poised for economic growth with two hydrogen hubs, stands to benefit significantly from these updates.

Why US Towns are Changing Lanes from Electric to Hydrogen Buses
U.S. towns are shifting from battery electric to hydrogen fuel electric cell buses due to better range and reliability. While battery electric buses have limitations, especially in cold weather, hydrogen fuel cell electric buses can travel up to 300 miles, making them ideal for longer routes. King County, WA, is planning trials by 2026, and Montgomery County, MD, is constructing a renewable energy-powered bus depot. Hydrogen fuel cell electric buses offer better performance in extreme conditions, faster refueling, and significant environmental benefits, positioning them as a promising alternative to battery electric buses in public transportation. We want to congratulate?Ballard Power Systems?(USHA Founding Member) and?New Flyer?for providing these buses and the majority of the fuel cell electric buses in the U.S.!

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Nearly $2 Billion to Support American Auto Workers, Convert Facilities for Electric Vehicles
As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the?U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)?announced $1.7 billion to convert 11 auto manufacturing facilities across eight states to zero emission vehicle production, creating and retaining thousands of union jobs. This initiative supports the domestic production of electric vehicles, hybrid powertrains, hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, and related components, ensuring America's competitiveness in the global auto industry. The program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to bolster domestic supply chains and support American workers. Projects selected will create over 2,900 new jobs and retain more than 15,000 union jobs, also benefiting disadvantaged communities through the Justice40 Initiative.

Fraunhofer’s semiconducting glass generates hydrogen from sunlight
?The German?Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI?has developed a new design for producing hydrogen using sunlight, known as the photoelectrochemical (PEC) process. This innovative approach uses semiconductors in a tandem PEC module, which combines solar energy absorption and hydrogen production in one unit. The module absorbs short-wavelength light on one side and long-wavelength light on the other, separating hydrogen and oxygen during generation. Researchers coated glass with semiconducting materials, enhancing hydrogen yield through ultra-gentle coating methods. This compact, modular solution generates over 30 kilograms of hydrogen per year per 100 square meters under European sunlight conditions, offering a robust and scalable alternative for flexible hydrogen generation.
