America facing largest hydrogen deployment in history: 14 GW, 24 states and billions of dollars

As the U.S. moves closer to completing its renewable energy infrastructure, hydrogen is emerging as a key player in the ecological transition. The largest hydrogen deployment in history, spanning 14 GW across more than 20 states, has just been approved. The America Hydrogen Stream, a series of projects under the?U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Hydrogen Shot initiative, aims to drastically reduce the cost of clean hydrogen, making it a cornerstone for electricity generation, industrial decarbonization, and transport. With billions of dollars invested and widespread participation from states like California, New York, and West Virginia, this initiative is set to revolutionize the energy landscape. As hydrogen blending and advanced electrolysis technologies gain traction, the U.S. is poised to lead in the global shift toward clean energy, potentially paving the way for a new era of sustainable mobility.

US Makes Stuttering Progress on Clean Hydrogen

Two years after the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) created significant excitement for clean hydrogen in the U.S., progress has slowed amid uncertainty around policy support. While generous subsidies worth billions remain on hold, the industry is in a state of limbo, with many projects stalled due to unclear qualification rules for tax credits. The U.S. initially seemed poised to lead in hydrogen production, but with a heavy focus on supply and limited incentives to drive demand, the sector faces challenges. Developers are hesitant to make final investment decisions without more clarity on the future of these tax credits, which may not come until after the presidential election. Some experts fear that if the current rigid rules for hydrogen tax credits are maintained, it could hinder the industry’s growth in the U.S. Despite this, projects targeting existing demand sources, such as?ExxonMobil’s hydrogen project in Texas, are moving forward, with potential for both domestic use and export. The U.S. hydrogen industry requires a balanced approach to get off the ground and compete globally, with a need for clear, supportive policies to drive both supply and demand.

Governor Newsom, state and federal leaders celebrate launch of California’s first-in-the-nation hydrogen hub

Last week, California marked the launch of the nation's first hydrogen hub, a significant development in advancing clean energy. Governor Gavin Newsom, U.S. Undersecretary of Energy David Crane, and Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), along with other state and federal leaders, gathered in the Bay Area to showcase the potential of hydrogen. The event included a ride on the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger ferry, provided by one of our founding members, Zero Emission Industries. This hydrogen hub, supported by $12.6 billion in funding, including $1.2 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to reduce carbon emissions, create jobs, and build a sustainable energy future. This hub represents a major leap in our journey toward a sustainable and hydrogen-powered energy landscape.
