Useful Tips for Contacting a Supervisor for MSc or PhD Applications

Reaching out to a potential supervisor for your MSc or PhD application can be daunting, especially when trying to stand out among hundreds of other applicants. Based on my experience, using ResearchGate or LinkedIn for your first contact can significantly increase your chances of getting noticed. Supervisors and professors often receive countless emails daily, many of which unfortunately end up in spam folders or go unseen due to the sheer volume of messages.

Here are some tips for effectively reaching out:

  1. Use ResearchGate or LinkedIn for Initial Contact: These platforms offer a more direct approach. Supervisors are likely to see your message as part of their academic network. It also allows you to demonstrate that you've reviewed their work and are genuinely interested in their research.
  2. Be Clear and Concise: Introduce yourself briefly, state your academic background, and mention why you're interested in their research. Keep your message professional but approachable.
  3. Reference Their Research: Show that you’ve done your homework by mentioning specific projects or papers they've worked on that align with your research interests.
  4. Attach Your CV: Ensure it’s polished and includes relevant experience to make a strong first impression.
  5. Follow Up: If you don’t hear back after a week or two, send a polite follow-up message.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of making a positive impression and starting your postgraduate journey on the right foot.
