"They used Chat-GPT to write a policy to ban... Chat-GPT" Edition

I watched recently an incredible talk from Ethan Mollick , a Wharton professor who published a book called Co-Intelligence. What I like about him is that speaks about AI with no absolutes, and encourages everyone to experiment.

In this talk he told the story of someone who shared with him in confidence, that they had used CHAT-GPT to write a policy to ban CHAT-GPT from being used... in their workplace.

I can think of this simply as "oh, the irony". But look what it signals.

On one hand, the power of AI doing things better and faster. On the other, the sheer contradiction of how fear is blocking us from accessing better ways of doing things.

Now, you will find a lot of people who are putting these things in place to "protect the company, to make sure we are safe". Like math teachers who decades ago were protesting against the use of calculators. And nowadays, we don't even question using a calculator.

But in an incredible PLOT TWIST, I'm not here to criticize these folks. I'm asking for all of us to NOT leave them behind.

Even if it's hard, we need to bring them into the AI bandwagon. Have them play with, talk about it, discuss pros and mitigate cons.

So if you find someone like that, or if like me, you were like that at some point.

Embrace them, show them the possibility that AI is bringing us.

You will learn from it.

They will appreciate it.

And we will all benefit from it.

I don't think it is about leaving anyone behind anyways Marco Andre ??, people will catch up when they are ready for it. And as it happens, technology is rather easy to catch up with.

Marco Andre ??Do you think that Stanford team had used CHAT-GPT to write their 500 page AI Index report as well? I need ChatGPT to read it ?? https://aiindex.stanford.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/HAI_AI-Index-Report-2024.pdf

I agree that people don't have an option but to adopt AI. Not sure about the calculator ban analogy because Maths teachers weren't worried about losing their jobs to calculators, and while they didn't replace teachers, calculators did fundamentally change education. In contrast, AI's capability will change society as we know it challenging jobs and societal structures. Just to be controversial, for example, do we think convinvicing someone who is a 20-year long designer, went to art college and creates beautiful designs, will be satisfied typing a bunch of key words into Midjourney to create an image? Some maybe, all, probably not. I am an early adopter and believe in the power of AI but there are many who will suffer it's consequences, and bringing them along will be very difficult. How do we balance machine-created vs human-created? That goes for everything from art to code.

Damn this is ironic... and an excellent point Marco. In 1988 I was doing my GCSEs... unaware of rebel maths teacher protests. They would be burning smart phones too.

Yes! Create a contagion that makes the “late adopters” curios and then jealous. And welcome them at any stage they decide to join.
