Are you a white, straight, with no visible handicap man and held a power position? This article is for you.
Calm down! You don′t need to start your defense mode and disqualify the content that you haven′t yet read labelling it as silliness.
Do you remain unrelated or intimidated with all this fast-moving discussion about inclusion and diversity that we face today? Do you still think it has nothing up to you?
Let me tell that you are losing time and wasting a great opportunity to lead the needed cultural change to maintain the competitiveness, bring innovation and guarantee your company sustainability, in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world.
Your power position is non-delegable. It is useless to define and declare that you are an allied to the diversity and inclusion cause if you don′t demonstrate it. You have to lead by example. Or would you rather have your team thinking that "what you (don't) do speaks so loud that they can barely hear what you say"?
Be the change maker that only you can be, where you are, due to the power position you held.
How do you begin? Bringing to consciousness and accepting your bias and prejudices. Yes, you have various prejudices. All human being has. Our brain is a judgement machine (read more about it in: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/our-daily-prejudice-neivia-justa/)
Prejudices accepted? Face them daily and tirelessly. Invest the time needed to unlearn your beliefs, thoughts, behaviors, attitudes and excluding, elitist, sexist, racist, homophobe, actions...Fight to stop being a reproducer of the "standard and normality" dictatorship.
Stay sensitive, curious, humble and thirsty to learn about people different from you. Leave your bubble. Hear, talk and hang out with those who exist beyond the walls of your corporate castle. Have a volunteer job. You can only develop empathy for something or someone that you know. Bring diversity to your life.
You will never be able to speak on behalf of those who are different from you. But you can and you might use your power position to make way for all. So that they can speak and have the same opportunities. To include them all in your wealth world. To influence the other men leaders in your network to do the same. Because this is human. Inclusive. Fair. And good for all.
This is what changes the world.
