Use What You Have!

Use What You Have!

‘Making websites using WordPress is for clowns. Real people use code.’

You might have heard some people saying this all over social media. Creating websites with WordPress is often criticized, with some saying it's for amateurs and that real professionals code from scratch. Such sentiments circulate widely on social media, and individuals who opt for WordPress may feel a sense of shame. This negative perception can contribute to feelings of Imposter Syndrome.

Similar attitudes are observed in the field of Graphic Design. Many, including myself, use Canva for design projects, but few openly admit to it. In my experience, Canva has proven to be a powerful tool, generating significant revenue over the past few months. Only when designing logos or other complex design projects do I get the need to use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or Corel Draw.

Contrary to these sentiments, did you know that most websites are built on WordPress? Yes, numerous websites belonging to prominent organizations, educational institutions, major corporations, and influential individuals are powered by WordPress. Even successful e-commerce websites often utilize WordPress.

Consider the following examples of websites built on WordPress. Number 3, 7, and 11 will shock you.

  1. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
  2. Visit Mexico
  3. State House Kenya
  4. Sony Music
  5. State House Nigeria
  6. County Government of Kakamega
  7. The White House
  8. BBC America
  9. Microsoft News
  10. County Government of Siaya
  11. Moringa School
  12. Kisumu County Government
  13. Mombasa County Government
  14. Optiven
  15. Equity Bank Kenya

To find out if a specific website is built on WordPress, you can use online tools like BuiltWith or Wappalyzer Browser Extension from Chrome Webstore.

While many websites use WordPress, numerous others are built on alternative Content Management Systems (CMS). Examples include Joomla, Drupal, Adobe Experience Manager, and more.

?

Here are examples of websites built on other CMS:

  1. Kenyatta University - Joomla CMS
  2. County Government of Busia - Joomla CMS
  3. Egerton University - Joomla CMS
  4. University of Nairobi - Drupal CMS??
  5. National Portal of India - Drupal CMS
  6. South African Government - Drupal CMS
  7. Mercedes-Benz - Adobe Experience Manager CMS

?

The list goes on and on. You have seen that even big organizations employ WordPress Developers to make their websites. What makes you think Small Business Owners will turn you down? Most clients don’t understand the technologies behind website creation. Or if they do, they don’t really care. All they want is a good responsive website. Most websites don’t need much data/resources, they behave like a well-formatted PDF hosted somewhere. In that case, WordPress would be a perfect technology to be used for developing the site. There are advantages to building some websites on WordPress. We will cover that in the course. Access the Course Outline here.

?

So, don’t feel ashamed of learning Website Design using WordPress. Don’t feel low when using Canva to do your Graphic Design Projects. Don’t hesitate to pay tax to the Government of Kenya. You are on the right track.

And above all, functionality is everything for a website. I think because it makes the backend work a little easier, the focus on UI/UX becomes more with wordpress.

Raul's encouragement to aspiring web designers and graphic artists to embrace these tools without shame is spot on. It's about achieving results efficiently and meeting client needs effectively. Cheers to breaking stereotypes and embracing the tools that empower creativity!

Raul Nyabola hits the nail on the head – the notion that WordPress is only for amateurs is a misconception. In reality, many influential organizations and businesses, including the likes of BBC America, Microsoft News, and The White House, leverage the power of WordPress for their websites. The versatility and user-friendly nature of WordPress make it a go-to choice for a wide range of projects.
