Use this simple, step-by-step system to start small in order to finish big

When our dreams exceed our resources and our vision transcends our present opportunities, we must remember to start small even as we strive toward success.

Several years ago, teenage millionaire phenomenon, Farrah Gray, wrote a book called Reallionaire. Farrah Gray was no ordinary teenager. He wore a suit and tie, had an office on Wall Street and another one in Los Angeles. Gray sold his first business at the age of 14yrs old, for more than a million dollars. He invested that money in a partnership with Inner City Broadcasting, one of the prominent African American owned businesses in the country.

According to People magazine, Gray is the only African American teenager to rise from public assistance to a business mogul without being in entertainment or having a family connection. When he was just six, Gray’s mother became seriously ill, prompting his decision to provide for his family, and he spent the first $50 he ever made taking them for a sit-down dinner. At the age of eight, he funded his first business club. By fourteen, with a million dollars in his pocket, Gray was well on his way to business success.

Gray coined the term “Reallionaire,” to describe ‘someone who has discovered that there is more to money than having money. A person who understands that success is not just about being rich in your pocket; You have to be rich on the inside, too, Gray says.

In this article you will learn a simple step-by-step system to start small in order to finish big. I believe that by being aware of the traps that keep us from our true potential, we can make a shift from accidental to intentional growth. Gray’s story is an inspiration to us all. He created a deliberate plan for his personal growth, and you can too.

According to John C. Maxwell, author of the 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, there are eight growth-gap traps that keep us from our true potential: The Assumption Gap, The Knowledge Gap, The Timing Gap, The Mistake Gap, The Perfection Gap, Inspiration Gap, Comparison Gap, and the Expectation Gap. (see Fig 1. Below)

Ask these questions

These personal questions changed many paradigms in my life: “What am I willing to face if I do not fight for what I think is possible?” or rather: “What is the price I would pay if I did not follow my intuition?” For me unhappiness is not knowing what we want.

Ask yourself –

Which direction would I like to go in life?

Where is the farthest I can imagine going?

Take action now

Gray’s progress was marked by one of the principles of success he learned along the way, creating not just an extraordinary story but a step-by-step primer for others to create success in their own lives with honour, charity, and compassion.

Finishing big, as the title of this article suggests is relative. It can mean developing in the value/s that are important to the individual; physical health, relationships, spirituality, and finances, for examples. As it relates to money, we do not get money to become successful, we become successful, and the money naturally follows. Money without a strong character can lead to ruin.

It is the people who take action to reach their goals that succeed in life. It can be overwhelming to take on, but when you start out simple and start taking action, anything is achievable. Here are four reasons why taking action is a crucial element to the system of starting small in order to finish big:

1.Actions activate information

Only through application can information be made useful.

2. Actions facilitate the process of elimination

Trial and error are a natural consequence of taking action. As you make the necessary pivots during this process, it will help you to eliminate the techniques that do not work for you. The benefits of this are unlimited as it leaves you time and energy to focus on practising and perfecting the techniques that do!

3. Actions create the habits that can lead to success

According to many of my students, the hardest part of taking action is getting started. Is it the same for you? Isaac Newton, the famous physicist, identified the first law of motion: A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force. This simply means that things cannot start, stop, or change direction all by themselves.

The more you repeat a new action, the more natural it becomes, but if you never start, it will never become a habit.

4. Actions contribute to our overall sense of fulfilment

You can read all my books, listen, and watch every episode of Eliot Kelly TV, or attend one of our international offline or online events, however, until you put what you have learned into action, you will not feel fulfilled or witness results in your own life.

If you find yourself reading a ton of self-help books or attending countless seminars and listening to audio resources without ever taking action, then you may need to explore the possibility that this is your way of procrastinating and resisting change.

Tony Robbins, motivational and peak performance coach, told me on one occasion, where I was fortunate to grab a moment of his attention, “Eliot, never leave the scene of making a decision without taking action towards your goal.” I have a high regard for Tony’s message as it is practical, within my control and very empowering. I think we all experience times in our lives when we feel helpless. One of the weaker moments in my life was losing my Mom to cancer. I had many questions. Some of these questions included asking why to try so hard, why life is so unfair and should I continue with my life or take it. I learned that depression can easily become a place of comfort and now looking back I am embarrassed at the pity party I was throwing for myself. The positive things that came out of that period of deteriorating mental health outweigh the negative. I decided that throwing away everything I had learned from the role model of my Mother would be a waste. She would have wanted me to acknowledge that life can be unfair, but I could also hear her saying that life is not about what happens to us, but what we do about what happens to us.

At this very moment reading this line, there is something you can do that can move you closer to your goals. If you do not know what you want from life, then this is a huge opportunity to begin applying what you now know to be the first law of motion. On a piece of paper/page try this: (Manual writers and excel/electronic fans we are going in!) Head the paper/page horizontally — ‘Start’ ‘Stop’ ‘Change’

Vertically, to keep this simple, number 1 through 3. Identify and write three SMART goals for each category and fill in the blanks. Are you ready to take action? 1. Do you need any resources to achieve your goals?

2. Of the resources that you need, which do you currently have access to?

3. What may be the potential obstacles on your path from where you are now to where you want to go?

4. What actions, if taken now, can help you avoid/overcome potential obstacles?

Act now. The longer you wait, the less likely you will act, and you cannot succeed if you do not take action.

What good does it do you to simply know of any effective technique if you never try it out?

During an interview, Farrah Gray was asked what the secret to success is. Gray replied, “In life we don’t get what we want, we get what we are…” Statistically speaking, a percentage of people will read the simple step-by-step system outlined here and do absolutely nothing. However, there will also be a percentage of people who will read the simple step-by-step system outlined here, start small and finish big. Most people are not willing to put in the work and make the necessary sacrifices. Are you?
