“Use It or Lose It”

(W)ord Matthew 25:28 and 2nd John 5:8; “So He took the talent from him who had one and gave to the one who had the five.” / 2nd John 5:8 “Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what you have been given...”

(O)bservation I find two main Observations in today’s W.O.R.D. One, we have all read or heard the parable of he Talents. One was given Five. One was given two. And the other was given only one. The first two invested (used) their talent and doubled the value. The third one did nothing with it. He was afraid that he might lose it.

Most scholars feel that the talents were money. But could it also refer to the different talents we have been given? In the parable, the one with one not only did nothing with it, but it was taken away from him and he lost it.

Now 2nd John 5:8 seems to back it up. We are “Watch out for the talent we have been given, so that we may not lose it…”

(R)esponse What good is a talent or gift that has been given us worth if we never use it or even open it. Like on Christmas when the kids just rip open the package and see what’s in it, set it aside and reach for the next one? Just like these Daily W.O.R.D.s, that you may read. We read the (W)ord verse and even take time to (O)bserve what it says to us. If I don’t take a (R)esponse or action, I feel that I have just wasted time and might as well just close my journal, turn on the news and get another cup of coffee.

I find, (like myself), many want more from GOD, but if I am not using what He has already given me, why should He trust giving me more? Like the gift of His Son, when I accepted that, I now HAVE Eternal Life.. Not life until I sin again. He NEVER takes that away, but the other talent that He gave me is found in 1st Thessalonians 2:4 where it says; “But as we were allowed of GOD to be put in trust with the Gospel, even so we SPEAK…” We are not to hide that gift, but to invest it in others. If we are not doing that, then why should we expect other gifts or talents from Him?

(D)ialogue LORD and my Best FRIEND, never let me become like the one who just hid his talent. Remind me to invest it. That man was afraid he might lose it. He should have read John 6:9 “And ALL that the Father who sent to me gives me, I would lose no one…”
