In my previous post, I revealed how Merrill Lynch used a simple yet brilliant ad to generate 3 million leads and become a financial giant.
Today, we’re diving deeper into why this approach is so powerful.
And how you can use it too to generate leads every day, customers every week, and clients every month on LinkedIn and beyond.
Imagine eliminating the feast and famine cycle for good.
But first, let me introduce you to someone who perfected it: David Ogilvy.
Demonstrate How Good You Are by Showing People You Can Help Them
It's a novel concept, I know.
But by actually helping people, you not only increase your influence.
You also create a lot of goodwill in your marketplace.
This goodwill helps you reach a much larger segment of your market.
Just like Merrill Lynch did.
Because people are ten times more likely to come to you to learn something than they are to be sold to.
Let’s Break Down the Merrill Lynch Masterpiece
The ad begins with a brilliantly written headline:
"What Everybody Ought to Know About the Stock and Bond Business."
This headline presupposes that everyone wants to know about it.
And it assumes there are things they don’t know.
Addressing Skepticism and Building Trust
While most competitors scream "buy, buy, buy," this ad addresses reader skepticism head-on.
It includes an upfront box that reads, "Why are we publishing this information?"
This box explains why Merrill Lynch is providing this information.
It addresses the skepticism in the reader’s mind.
And allows them to focus on the content.
The ad simplifies the complex stock and bond business.
Making it accessible to layman investors.
It addresses common questions in neatly sub-headed sections.
Providing value and educating the reader well before asking for anything in return.
Despite its educational focus, the ad still generates leads effectively.
The call to action (CTA) reads, "We'd be glad to send you a copy of this ad in pamphlet form at no charge and no obligation. Just write or phone us."
This approach encourages readers to volunteer to become leads.

The Impact and Influence of David Ogilvy
This approach worked so well for Merrill Lynch that it generated 3 million leads and millions of customers.
However, one man noticed its potential and perfected it, David Ogilvy.
Ogilvy, a former British chef, saw this ad in the New York Times.
He was fascinated by its long word count and unique approach.
He modeled and perfected it, creating 17 ads to sell his own advertising agency services.
His agency, Ogilvy and Mather, used these ads to sell over $1.4 billion worth of advertising during the 1970s.
And it remains one of the biggest advertising agencies in the world today.
Why This Approach is So Effective
This approach builds immense goodwill in your market.
It cuts through the noise and hype of your competitors.
It positions you as a trusted authority in your field.
And it helps you connect with a much larger audience.
Most businesses focus all their marketing efforts on the 3% of the market that's ready to buy right now.
But there's a massive opportunity in reaching the other 97%.
Those who aren’t yet ready to buy but could become valuable customers with the right approach.
Implementing This Strategy
To truly reach your business potential, focus on creating a free resource that solves a problem.
These are free reports, checklists or valuable content pieces that you offer in exchange for contact details.
This approach, inspired by Merrill Lynch, can significantly increase your conversion rates and sales.
For example, let’s say you get 100 visitors to your landing page.
If you offer a free resource that solves a problem, you can increase your conversion rate to 25%.
Generating 25 leads instead of 3.
Even if your close rate drops to 12%, you still end up with 3 sales instead of 1.
Tripling your sales with the same amount of traffic.
This is the power of offering free resources that solve problems.
They not only provide value and establish you as an authority.
But also create hotter leads who are more likely to convert.
In my next post, I will discuss how to implement this strategy in your own business using LinkedIn.
We will explore step-by-step how to create free resources that solve problems.
Drive traffic to your landing pages.
And convert those leads into sales.
