Use Line Spaces and Avoid Abbreviations

Use Line Spaces and Avoid Abbreviations

Welcome to the final lesson in our #littlelinkedinlesson series on spacing! Today, we’ll cover the importance of adding line spaces and avoiding unnecessary abbreviations.

Line Spaces: When you copy text from a Word document into LinkedIn, the intended line spaces often disappear. Because large blocks of text are visually intimidating, they may cause people to move on to the next person on their list. To improve reading ease, add line spaces to separate your text into paragraphs and bullet points.

While bots can read your text either way, people are visual and prefer well-separated sections. Don’t make it hard for human readers; add line spaces to enhance readability and make your profile more visually appealing.

Actionable Tip: Review your profile’s About and Experience sections, and add line spaces between paragraphs and bullet points to improve visual appeal.

Avoid Abbreviations: Abbreviations like “Sr” for Senior or “Mgr” for Manager can harm your profile’s searchability. LinkedIn's bots may not associate abbreviations with the full words. So, write your titles in full to ensure your keywords are recognized. If you need more space, revise your text to fit these essential terms.

Actionable Tip: Review your profile for unnecessary abbreviations and replace them with full words to ensure optimal keyword recognition.

YOU ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN LINKEDIN LEARNING AND FUN:

I held my first Love Your LinkedIn Challenge in February, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. So I'm offering a new complimentary 5-day challenge beginning on June 11, 2024, again focused on practicing engagement skills on this essential business platform. Lessons will appear on June 11, 12, 13, 17, and 18 at 8:00 am Eastern, delivered by my #littlelinkedinlesson newsletter to subscribers' email inboxes. (SUBSCRIBE at the top of this article to ensure you catch each lesson.)

Why not five days in a row? I have personally never completed even a 3-day challenge within the expected timeframe. We're all busy, so I'm adding time along the way so you don't lose heart and quit.

You are invited to read the short lesson, implement the assignment, and share your work by posting a screenshot on the day's post. If you have not subscribed to my newsletter, you can do so at the top of this article. Subscribers will find that LinkedIn has shared a lesson link to their email for the day.

Why bother? You'll be able to practice essential engagement skills—and you could be my challenge winner. The point is both learning and fun. I'll be judging based on the quantity and quality of assignment submissions. The winner will receive my #1 Best-Selling book, LinkedIn for the Savvy Executive. All entries must be completed by Wednesday, June 19, 2024, and the winner will be announced on Friday, June 21.

Judy Carlson, CPA, winner of the February challenge this year had this to say:

"Carol is an excellent communicator and trainer who always gives positive feedback. I am honored she chose me as the winner. A copy of her book arrived today. Her inscription to me is: "May you shine as brightly on LinkedIn as you do in person." Carol and her book are such a gift to me."

I hope you'll join me as we explore ways to engage on LinkedIn in my Love Your LinkedIn Engagement Challenge.
