When I was at GE, I had the opportunity to learn from a good friend
Viv Goldstein
and this quote from her has stuck with me since: “Use the culture to change the culture.” Lately, I’ve been thinking about what this looks like for health care innovators. Some practices I see in health care could shape how we approach healthcare innovation:???
- We diagnose before we prescribe. As a "rule" do you think innovators prescribe before we diagnose. In the Emergency Dept., my good friend
Matt Sullivan
? asks for labs before making?a decision. What is the “lab” we should draw to determine our next steps in innovation? ?
- We understand and apply theory: Einstein said nothing is more practical than a good theory. Germ Theory and Cell Theory revolutionized health care. Shared understanding of theory helps teams work better together and get to solutions quicker. What theories can help us learn faster and better understand the problems consumers and companies are facing? ?
- We put patients in an observation status: When we need more time to understand what is happening, we spend time intentionally observing the patient and watching their vitals. How often do we truly observe problems? How much time do we spend with people in their natural habitat observing their struggles, understanding, etc.??
- We use the scientific method to get insights to validate or invalidate assumptions. How often in “innovation efforts” do we take the time to document assumptions and then design an experiment, run a test and get insights? ?
- We design and utilize evidence-based protocols with shared language, tools and methods: W. Edwards Deming once said, “If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing." A protocol can be explained in common language, using shared tools and methods. What shared language and tools are needed to develop an innovation protocol and performance model???
Those are just five key things in medicine that we can and must utilize in our innovation efforts to improve impact. Which parts of your industry’s culture can support your innovation efforts???

2 年Love this! Makes me think about how we can improve our efforts to "see the end in mind" as we try to better understand the why around some of our efforts. It would be similar to our individual journeys as healthcare consumers where we evaluate a treatment and the possible pro's and con's before we apply them.

2 年Great thoughts Todd Dunn These innovative approaches need to be deployed upstream, where health occurs; in the home. How do we reply these techniques to proactively discover the jobs to be done and solve for health before the crisis of illness?
