Use ChatGPT to Split User Stories

ChatGPT project management experiment: split an example user story that’s too big to deliver in one sprint. Use the SPIDR technique (Mike Cohn, et al).??

I asked Chat GPT: Use the SPIDR technique to split this user story: "As a user, I want to be able to log into a website with my username and password so that I can view the web page."

I learned:

• There’s no substitute for a human in story splitting, at least for now.
• Login functionality won’t be nearly complete with stories 1-4 (below). But some or all of 1-4 are likely do-able in one sprint. And they’ll provide learning for the remaining development, and perhaps some early feedback to guide development too.
• ChatGPT generates decent split stories. But the prompts and stories will need human tune ups.
• Even so, this saves much documentation time.

No Spike (the S in SPIDR) needed this time.

Story 1: Paths (the P in SPIDR)

• As a user, I want to go from the login screen to the website landing page.

Story 2: Interfaces (The I in SPIDR)

• As a user, I want to login only with the Firefox web browser (to start, other browsers in following sprints)

Story 3: Data (the D in SPIDR)

• As a user, I want the login functionality to only check the entered password against the stored password, and log me in when they match. (Only happy path to start, consider other data in following sprints)

Story 4: Rules (the R in SPIDR)

• As a user, I want the only rule enforced during login to be that the entered password matches the stored password on the website. (Only happy path to start, consider all business rules in following sprints)
