Innovation at Network Rail (NR) went under the spotlight to an audience of railway industry leaders from the USA yesterday (Jan 30).
The US delegation, representing train and infrastructure owners from across America, got to see the very latest technology now being used by NR to capture and exploit asset data to deliver a simpler, greener, better railway.
Here to discover how new tools and digital technology at NR could help manage the vast north American rail infrastructure, the group said they were ‘amazed’ at the ground-breaking innovation taking place.
The data-driven railway
A joint NR team from Route Services and the Technical Authority delivered presentations on the Digital Lineside Inspection tool, by head of delivery Mike Brown CEng MICE – to see how we manage lineside environments; and a live demonstration of the insight predict and prevent maintenance tool, by senior programme manager Martin Mason .
Programme manager Tom Edge , and project manager Daisy Daymond MAPM from the Technical Authority, presented FELIX - the switches and crossings Laser Measurement Trolley.
Kevin McCann, chief operating officer at Metra – Chicago’s primary commuter rail system – said:
“The digital technology we have witnessed here is amazing. You are clearly decades ahead and we are very interested in the innovation taking place in Britain right now – and keen to see how this could help us run a more efficient railway in the US.”
The session at Charing Cross included a deep dive into the Train Borne Overhead Line Monitoring Strategy by Ndaba Moyo, senior engineer, and Bradley Dzimba, senior asset engineer, from NR’s North West and Central region.

Ground-breaking
Katie Choe, chief of staff at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said: “We’re very excited by the scope and potential of these groundbreaking tools, especially insight.
“Not only is it great to see the development taking place here, but collaborative events like this where we can share ideas can only benefit the global railway industry.”
Wayne Cherry , programme manager Route Services, who organised the event said the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
He said: “The whole delegation was extremely surprised and impressed by how far ahead of other infrastructure managers we are here – it’s something we should be very proud to share with global railway owners.”
