How USA Election System Works

  • In America the elections are held after every 4 years and the election date is also fixed that is [First Tuesday After 1st November]
  • In USA the elections are carried out using the ballot papers.

  • In USA the elections are held on same day for all (President , House of Representative & Senator elections)
  • Here in Indian contest House of representative is like Lok Sabha and the Senate means Rajya Sabha.

House of Representative

  • The House of representative has total 435 seats.

House of Senate

  • The house of senate has total 100 number of members. Every state has 2 senator in USA so accordingly the USA has 50 states in total.
  • The senator has 6 years of working tenure and they are elected in every 2 years in the ratio of 1/3.

Concept of Electors

  • Electors are individuals selected to participate in the Electoral College, which is the body responsible for formally electing the President and Vice President.
  • The number of electors for each state is equal to the total number of its congressional representatives (both Senators and House members). There are a total of 538 electors across all states and Washington, D.C.

Safe States

  • It is observed over the years that there are certain states where the always vote for same party in every elections like, The Democratic Party has 7 such safe states while the Republican Party has 13 states.

Swing States

  • This swing states are the real difference makers states in election. In USA there are total 7 swing states.
  • In this election all 7 swing states supported the Republican Party.

The Impact on India

  • Illegal Immigration : Donald Trump is not in favour of immigration so some reports says that it can affect more than 1 million Indians. He is also against the concept of H-1B Vias.



  • Higher tariffs : Means (are taxes imposed by a country on imported goods, making those goods more expensive). Here the goal of raising tariffs is often to protect domestic industries from foreign competition by encouraging consumers to buy locally made products.

  • Trade Relation : Trump may push for more balanced trade, potentially pressuring India to lower tariffs and open its markets to more U.S. goods, continuing his America First approach.

  • Affecting Sectors : In India there are few sectors which will affect like Information Technology, Defence Sector and many more. Trump want to reduce the cooperate taxes.
