U.S. values on cultural issues, presidential historical favorability and more

Get the latest Pew Research Center findings and everything you need to dive deeper into the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Ahead of the first 2024 presidential debate, 25% of Americans hold unfavorable views of both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. That is the highest share expressing negative views of both major candidates at about this point in the election cycle in any election in recent history.

  • At this point in the last three presidential election cycles, each of the major party candidates – Hillary Clinton and Trump in 2016, and Biden and Trump in 2020 and 2024 – have had favorable ratings below 50%.
  • In contrast, in every election between 1988 and 2012, at least one candidate had a favorable rating of at least 50% at about this point. In 2004 and earlier, both candidates had ratings of at least 50%.
  • Dig into historical presidential favorability ratings.

Voters who support Biden and Trump have starkly different opinions on social and cultural issues. Yet in many cases, Biden and Trump supporters are themselves sharply divided.

It is interesting to see this research. It is also not a surprise to me as a psychotherapist. What is confusing though is why both parties don't seem to be paying attention to this and have not done anything about finding a new candidate for both sides. It is never too late, and our country sorely needs a leader. We have not had a good one for a long time and we won't going forward with this election either.
