U.S. Travel accelerates in June with the start of summer, but overall travel demand lags prior year levels

Domestic travel heated up in June with the kickoff of summer travel, but the seasonal pickup in travelers fell below prior year levels. Omnitrak’s Travel Market Penetration Index rose in June to 113.5 (2015=100) – above prior month May 2024 (101.9), but below prior year June 2023 (123.4) levels.

By comparison, Marketable Leisure Travel continued to peform much better. Omnitrak’s Leisure Travel Index (which excludes trips for visiting friends/relatives and for business, incentive and convention purposes) posted its usual seasonal gain in June, climbing to 142.3 (i.e., above 134.6 in May, but falling just short of June 2023 (145.6) levels).

So, I’m a sucker for indexes. Love them! Did the analysis look at different markets or regions? I’m wondering if it shows any interesting divergences in performance. I say that because SD was essentially flat on the month (in YoY terms, I mean) by every measure, even though the news was widespread that performance had slackened just a bit nationally.
