?? Good morning from The Legal File! Here are today's top legal stories:
??? US seeks speedy Supreme Court review of Trump claim he is immune from prosecution
U.S. special counsel Jack Smith, prosecuting Donald Trump on federal charges of trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat, asked the Supreme Court to launch a fast-track review of the former president's claim he cannot be tried on those charges.
The top Court said it would quickly review Smith's request, ordering Trump's lawyers to respond to the request by Dec. 20.
It is rare for a prosecutor to ask the Supreme Court to intervene in a case before a lower appeals court has already ruled, but Smith's move reflects the urgency ahead of the Nov. 5 election . If re-elected, Trump could seek to pardon himself of any federal crimes.
?? Associate bonuses reach $360,000 at trial firm Susman Godfrey
Law firm Susman Godfrey will award seniority-based year-end bonuses to its associates worth between $140,000 and $360,000, far exceeding bonuses doled out by many of its larger competitors.
The bonuses are about double the amounts Susman Godfrey handed out last year, and more than triple what other U.S. law firms have committed to giving out this year.
This year's law firm bonus season kicked off last month when Milbank announced bonuses ranging from $15,000 to $115,000, which has been matched by Cravath, Swaine & Moore, and other large U.S. law firms.
?? US judiciary faces sexual harassment claims at trial
The U.S. federal judiciary's handling of former North Carolina public defender Caryn Strickland's sexual harassment complaint took center stage at the start of a trial centered on allegations that her supervisor subjected her to unwanted sexual advances.

Strickland called no witnesses before quickly resting her case against the judiciary shortly after the judge presiding over the non-jury civil trial in Asheville, North Carolina, heard opening statements from both sides.
Strickland worked from 2017 to 2019 in the Federal Public Defender's Office in the Western District of North Carolina, which, like others nationally, provides lawyers for indigent defendants and is part of the federal judiciary.
In a lawsuit filed in 2020, Strickland accused officials in that office and in the local federal court system of mishandling her sexual harassment claims, in violation of her equal protection and due process rights under the Constitution.
Called to the witness stand by a U.S. Department of Justice attorney defending the court system, Caryn Strickland said she began feeling "uncomfortable" after her then-supervisor proposed a "quid pro quo" to help her career after drinks in 2018.
The trial is expected to last through next Tuesday.
?? Law firm Steptoe shortens name, ending confusion over shared shingle
Forty-three years after it split itself into two law firms with the same name, Washington, D.C.-based Steptoe & Johnson LLP said it has changed its name to Steptoe LLP.
The name change will allow Steptoe to differentiate itself further from West Virginia-based law firm Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, which is not changing its name.
The firm has always been called "Steptoe by our clients and our colleagues, in all of our markets, in the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and China," Steptoe chair Gwen Renigar said.
Shorter names and single-name law firm brands have gained popularity over the years. Other recent examples of firms embracing single monikers include Milbank and Quarles.
