Ports on the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts reopened last Friday, October 4th, after dockworkers and port operators reached a wage agreement, ending the largest strike in the sector in nearly 50 years. Although the strike concluded sooner than expected, it will take time to clear the backlog of cargo, with estimates suggesting that the normal flow may not resume for two to three weeks. Read more.

  • Mets? Group targets 30% reduction in wood supply emissions by 2030

By 2030, Mets? Group aims to achieve a 30% reduction in fossil-based carbon dioxide emissions from its wood supply compared to the 2022 level. Most emissions associated with wood supply result from transportation by lorry, train, and ship to the mills for processing. To support this goal, Mets? Group has partnered with AtoB@C Shipping, a key shipping provider for wood transport in the Baltic Sea region, to jointly decrease wood transport emissions by 30% from the 2022 baseline by 2030. Kimberly-Clark, a global leader in health and hygiene products, is stepping up to assist communities impacted by Hurricane Helene, which has left a trail of destruction across the southeastern United States. The powerful storm has displaced thousands and caused widespread devastation, affecting areas where over 1,500 of the company’s employees live and work, particularly in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Beech Island, in South Carolina.   • Georgia-Pacific fined nearly US$650,000 following fatal workplace incident at Camas mill

Georgia-Pacific has been fined US$648,292 by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) following the death of a 32-year-old employee at its Camas paper mill. Dakota Cline, who had worked at the mill since 2022, was fatally injured on March 8 when he was crushed by a packing machine during a routine task. Learn more.
