The defending champions of the US Open are Coco Gauff (Women's Singles), Novak Djokovic (Men's Singles), Gabriela Dabrwoski & Erin Routliffe (Women's Doubles), Rajeev Ram & Joe Salisbury (Men's Doubles) and Anna Danilina & Harry Heliovaara (Mixed Doubles).
Gauff has had some mixed results leading into the tournament, especially a disappointing campaign both on the singles and doubles front at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and she has dropped doubles play for now in order to have added focus and preparation time for the defence of her US Open title.
"I'm not playing doubles. It's tough going week after week on the tour, that's why. But maybe next year I'll play here and there. I won't play doubles as consistently as I have in the past. The goal was just to try to be as good as I can," said Gauff.
Gauff will face a major threat from the likes of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elene Rybakina, while home favourite Danielle Collins is hoping to recover from a muscle pull suffered in the wake of the Olympics.
"After suffering from heat stroke in Paris, I pulled my rectus abdominis. I had a similar injury in this area almost four years ago that prevented me from competing for over four months. Obviously I don't want that to happen again. This was a little update for everyone who has been contacting me and checking in on me since my injury at the Olympics," said the American.
On the Men's side, Djokovic is flying high after winning Olympic Gold and will be in a buoyant mood ahead of defending his US Open title. His main threats will come from Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev.
Sadly, the US Open will not feature Rafael Nadal, who withdrew from the tournament due to injuries: "I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories," he wrote on X.
"I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my U.S. fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time."
Players will be competing for the largest purse in tennis history at the 2024 US Open. This year's tournament will offer a total of $75 million in prize money – a 15% increase from 2023.
All rounds played this year will see an increase in the prize money awarded from last year, which was the 50th year of equal prize money for men and women at the US Open. The men's and women's singles champions will see a 20% bump from $3 million to $3.6 million, while first-round main-draw losers in both men's and women's singles will also pocket $100,000 for the first time.
