U.S. Maritime Administration Announces $20 Million for Small Shipyards

MARAD (Maritime Administration) has announced funding for this year’s Small Shipyard program. For the fiscal year of 2023 they are allocating $20 million in grants for small shipyards. These funds will be used to help modernize small shipyards across the country as well as help improve their operations through training.

Small Shipyard Grants are available to small shipyards which are considered to be yards with fewer than 1,200 production employees.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated, “Small shipyards play vital roles in their local economies and our national economy…With these funds, we are helping small shipyards across the country train their workers, modernize their equipment, and improve their operations,”

In 2022, about $20 million in grants were awarded and distributed to 24 small shipyards across 19 states. According to DOT the Small Shipyard Grant Program “is designed to support small shipyard projects that make capital and related improvements; or provide training for workers in shipbuilding, ship repair and associated industries. Supporting these types of projects drives efficiency, competitive operations and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration across the industry.”

Applications for grants must be submitted by February 27, 2023, at 5:00pm EST. Further information can be found at https://www.maritime.dot.gov/grants-finances/small-shipyard-grants
