My Mother moved here from Warren Arkansas via Las Vegas in hopes of a better future for herself as a young single parent. As a young child, I was enrolled in a voluntary bussing program which took me out of my Central District neighborhood. A busload of us would be split between 2 Predominantly white schools in the North end.?I remember like it was yesterday, I’m still friends with the 12 that went to Olympic View with me just a few blocks from our old building. It’s a bond we will always share.
Black History Month is a time when the spotlight is on my People as a whole. We are celebrated and looked upon to share our culture with the world. Being able to attend the Inaugural Ball when President Barack Obama was in office makes me part of history. Us living the life now is history in the making.
I celebrate Black History every month and every day of my life. With a Black Son and Grandson, I'm socially aware and celebrate our heritage constantly. As a family, we do Sunday dinners. There's nothing like food cooked from your soul, like Grandma used to. Thing is, I'm Grandma now and my kitchen is always open.
