I was recently interviewed by Joseph Kennedy for his blog Content Pathway. And I tried to convey a sense of urgency and an understanding of the limited investment needed to change the water crisis we face.
Smart water technology can minimise water loss and save enormous amounts of energy. The American EPA writes that for most places in the US it would be a return on investment in a few months to a year. Becoming energy producing is a big investment, but the benefit of water utilities moving from the largest energy consumers to becoming energy producing is a huge step for the climate and the economy with an ROI of only 5-10 years.
Climate adaptation and separation of sewers and rainwater is expensive. But so is doing nothing when houses are flooded with sewage water. We can do climate adaptation while simultaneously creating recreative facilities and conserving nature close to the cities or even within. We can save the world while making it even more attractive to live in for everybody.
