The Urgency of the Gospel: Understanding the Devastation of the Tribulation and the Path to Salvation

The book of Revelation paints a vivid and alarming picture of the judgments of God that will befall the earth during the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation. These events are unprecedented in their severity and global impact, emphasizing the urgency of spreading the Gospel message now more than ever.

The Catastrophic Judgments

The unfolding judgments of the Tribulation, as described in Revelation, are both a warning and a call to action for believers today.

Seal Judgments: The Tribulation begins with the opening of the seven seals (Revelation 6). Each seal unleashes a new wave of calamity upon the earth. The first seal reveals a rider on a white horse, symbolizing conquest. This is followed by a rider on a red horse, representing war and bloodshed. The third seal unleashes famine, depicted by a rider on a black horse holding scales. The fourth seal brings widespread death, with a pale horse whose rider is named Death, followed by Hades, given authority to kill a quarter of the earth's population by sword, famine, plague, and wild beasts.

The fifth seal reveals the souls of martyrs under the altar, crying out for justice. This serves as a poignant reminder of the persecution that believers will face. The sixth seal brings a great earthquake, causing the sun to turn black, the moon to become like blood, and the stars to fall from the sky. The earth's inhabitants, from kings to slaves, hide in caves and call out for the mountains to fall on them, fearing the wrath of the Lamb.

Trumpet Judgments: The opening of the seventh seal introduces the seven trumpet judgments (Revelation 8-9). These judgments escalate the devastation. The first trumpet brings hail and fire mixed with blood, burning up a third of the earth, trees, and all green grass. The second trumpet turns a third of the sea into blood, destroying a third of sea life and ships. The third trumpet causes a great star, named Wormwood, to fall from the sky, poisoning a third of the fresh water. The fourth trumpet darkens a third of the sun, moon, and stars, plunging the earth into darkness.

The fifth trumpet releases demonic locusts from the Abyss, tormenting those without the seal of God for five months. The sixth trumpet unleashes a demonic army, killing a third of mankind. Despite these horrific events, Revelation 9:20-21 notes that the survivors still do not repent of their sins, highlighting the hardness of human hearts.

Bowl Judgments: The culmination of God's wrath is seen in the seven bowl judgments (Revelation 16). Painful sores afflict those who bear the mark of the beast. The second bowl turns the sea into blood, killing every living thing in it. The third bowl turns rivers and springs into blood, and the angel declares that God's judgments are just. The fourth bowl intensifies the sun's heat, scorching people with fire. Instead of repenting, they curse the name of God.

The fifth bowl plunges the beast's kingdom into darkness, causing people to gnaw their tongues in agony. The sixth bowl dries up the Euphrates River, preparing the way for the kings of the east. Unclean spirits, like frogs, go out to deceive the kings of the earth and gather them for the battle of Armageddon. The seventh bowl brings a devastating earthquake, splitting the great city into three parts and collapsing cities worldwide. Massive hailstones, each weighing about 100 pounds, rain down from the sky, causing further destruction.

The Urgency of the Gospel

In the face of such overwhelming devastation, the message of salvation through Jesus Christ becomes even more critical. The Bible makes it clear that now is the time for salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). The Church, while still present on earth, must seize every opportunity to share the Gospel with urgency and compassion.

Salvation During the Tribulation

Even during the Tribulation, God's grace remains accessible. Many will come to faith in Christ through various means:

144,000 Witnesses: Revelation 7 describes 144,000 Jews from the twelve tribes of Israel who are sealed by God and serve as evangelists. Their ministry will result in a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language coming to faith in Christ. This signifies a massive spiritual awakening during the Tribulation, showing that God’s mercy and desire for salvation extend even in times of judgment.

The Two Witnesses: Revelation 11 introduces two powerful witnesses who prophesy for 1,260 days. They perform miracles and proclaim God's truth, leading many to repentance and faith. Their eventual martyrdom and resurrection will be a powerful testimony to God's power and truth. These witnesses will stand in the face of great opposition, and their message will reach many who are searching for hope amidst the chaos.

The Everlasting Gospel: In Revelation 14:6-7, an angel is seen flying in midair, proclaiming the everlasting Gospel to every nation, tribe, language, and people. This divine proclamation serves as a final call to repentance and faith before the end comes. The message will be clear: "Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the springs of water."

The Role of Martyrs

Many believers during the Tribulation will face persecution and martyrdom for their faith. Revelation 7:14 speaks of a great multitude who have come out of the great tribulation, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Their testimony will inspire others to stand firm in their faith, even unto death, knowing that eternal life with Christ awaits them.

The courage and faithfulness of these martyrs will be a beacon of hope and encouragement to others who are suffering. Their ultimate victory in Christ will highlight the power of the Gospel and the hope of eternal life.

Can Those Who Have Rejected the Gospel Before the Tribulation Accept It During the Tribulation?

A significant question arises: Can those who have heard the Gospel prior to the Tribulation and rejected it still accept it during the Tribulation? Scripture provides insight into this important issue.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12, the Apostle Paul writes about the coming of the lawless one and the deception that will accompany his reign. He states:

"The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason, God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

This passage suggests that those who have willfully rejected the truth and taken pleasure in unrighteousness will be subject to a strong delusion, making it unlikely that they will turn to Christ during the Tribulation. However, it is essential to recognize that God's mercy is boundless, and there are many testimonies of people coming to faith under the most unlikely circumstances.

Revelation 9:20-21 also indicates that despite the severe judgments, many people will not repent of their sins. This further underscores the hardness of heart that can prevail even in the face of divine judgment.

Nevertheless, the examples of the 144,000 witnesses, the two witnesses, and the angel proclaiming the everlasting Gospel show that God will continue to reach out to humanity with opportunities for repentance and salvation.

Our Responsibility Now

As believers living before these events unfold, we have a profound responsibility to share the Gospel with urgency. The reality of the coming judgments should compel us to reach out to our neighbors, friends, and the world with the hope found in Jesus Christ. We are called to be ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), urging others to be reconciled to God.

The message of the Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). It is a message of hope, love, and redemption, and it must be shared with passion and urgency. As the world grows increasingly dark, the light of Christ must shine brighter through us.

Conclusion

The judgments of the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation will be devastating, yet God's desire to save remains evident throughout. Now is the time to act, to spread the Gospel with passion and urgency, so that many may come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ and be spared from the coming wrath. Let us be diligent in our mission, for the day of the Lord is at hand, and the eternal destinies of countless souls hang in the balance.

The prophetic visions in Revelation are not just warnings of future events but a call to action for the present. As believers, we must respond with a renewed commitment to evangelism, prayer, and discipleship. The time is short, and the need is great. Let us proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ with fervor, compassion, and unwavering faith, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
