The urgency of gender equality: UN Summit of the Future 2024's Call for Action

This past weekend, the headlines were dominated by politics, conflicts, and economic uncertainty. The sheer magnitude of global conflicts and anti-sentiments, left me feeling a bit overwhelmed. But then, my LinkedIn was flooded with voices at the the UN Summit of the Future 2024, that sparked a sense of hope—and I read its groundbreaking declaration. ????

The declaration which has benefited by the passionate advocacy of my many esteemed colleagues, former and current, is centered around building a fairer, more equitable world. As someone deeply invested in global development, I was especially heartened to see a renewed focus on two key elements: the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) and Human Rights. As I read the Declaration, what stands out the most for me is the bold commitment to gender equality as a foundational pillar of this vision.

Gender Equality as a Fundamental Principle for Sustainable Development

The UN declaration firmly anchors gender equality as a prerequisite for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is not just rhetoric. The document explicitly states that without "the full, safe, equal, and meaningful participation and representation of all women in political and economic life," sustainable development remains an unattainable goal. It goes further to highlight the role of women as essential in every domain of political, economic, and social life. ??

For many of us who have dedicated our professional (and personal lives) to advancing gender equity, this moment feels like a long-awaited acknowledgment of the critical role that women play in shaping a just and sustainable future.

I found myself particularly encouraged by several key commitments outlined in the declaration:?

1. Accelerating Gender Equality: The pledge to fast-track efforts toward gender equality and ensure the empowerment of all women and girls across every sphere of life is not just commendable—it's vital. ??????
2. Eliminating Discrimination and Violence: The unequivocal stance on eliminating all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls is another cornerstone. It’s an essential step to ensure that no woman is held back by systemic barriers, whether they be social, political, or economic. ????
3. Reaffirming the Beijing Declaration: The continued commitment to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (adopted in 1995) reaffirms a global policy framework for gender equality. This blueprint is still crucial today as it was decades ago, offering a comprehensive path forward for empowering women and realizing their human rights globally. ???
4. Gender as a Cross-Cutting Issue: The integration of gender equality as a cross-cutting issue, including in STEM fields, is an important step toward broadening female participation in critical sectors. As technology shapes our future, ensuring that women are at the forefront is no longer optional—it's imperative. ??????
5. Inclusive Societies and Global Governance: Finally, the focus on building inclusive societies that uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms is central to this declaration. More representative global governance structures, with the inclusion of women in leadership roles, will lead to more just and accountable decision-making processes. ??????

The Path Forward: Turning Words Into Action

The declaration resonates with an undeniable truth: despite significant progress over the last few decades, gender inequality remains a profound global challenge. In a world where estimates suggest that at the current pace, it may take 140 years for women to achieve equal representation in positions of power and leadership within the workforce. ?????        

What is perhaps most vital about this moment is the recognition that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the full inclusion of women. Their safety, equality, and meaningful participation are not just moral imperatives—they are essential for solving the world’s most pressing issues, from climate change to economic inequality. ????

As I reflect on the commitments made, I am reminded that these words must translate into real-world impact.

We have a shared responsibility to ensure that this declaration is more than just a lofty set of principles. We must actively push for policies, initiatives, and cultural changes that empower women and girls across the globe.?
