Introduction:?
In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, the buzz around AI often centers on the fear of job displacement among direct contributors. Employees across various sectors feel the pressure to adapt to and integrate AI into their daily tasks. However, the real pressure lies elsewhere. Executives, the leaders who steer organizations, are the ones facing the greatest imperative to embrace these technologies. Why? Because their competitors are already doing so, positioning themselves for future success.?
As I finished my MBA and landed a position as a technology leader, I was faced with decisions and products that incorporated AI every day. It became clear to me that business was more than just finances. An MBA covers a broad range of skills essential for managing and leading organizations, including strategic management and leadership, financial acumen, and marketing and operations. However, in today's market, it is about data, and AI was perfectly suited to taking over the data work inherent in all businesses. Recognizing this, I immediately enrolled in MS ITM courses. This proactive step made me realize that a business degree alone would not be sufficient to excel in today's business environment. AI, in all its forms and facets, would quickly take on these roles, and executives must be prepared.?
As of early 2024, there were 415,000 active IT job openings posted. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in information technology is predicted to grow by 15 percent by 2031, resulting in an additional 682,800 job openings- this will bring IT positions to compete as one of the highest demand occupations at the same time the AI implementation is underway likely meaning even more openings than currently forecast. This surge underscores the critical need for leaders who can navigate and integrate these advancements effectively.?
The Competitive Edge of AI Adoption:?
Leading companies are leveraging AI to gain a competitive advantage. For example, in the financial sector, AI is used for risk management and fraud detection, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.?
The Evolving Role of Executives:?
The responsibilities of the executive staff are changing in the AI era. Executives may find AI agents or assets in their organizational charts and need to understand these assets to use them effectively. For instance, a leadership team with a background in both business and technology can better oversee the implementation of AI-driven strategies, ensuring alignment with the company's goals. Simply finding others to handle AI and expecting them to manage the technology, as has been done in the past, is not going to work. The fast-paced evolution of AI requires executives to have a hands-on understanding to make informed strategic decisions and drive successful implementations.?
Differentiating Modern AI from Past Technologies:?
Unlike past technologies, such as calculators that served as passive tools, modern AI actively participates in business processes and makes decisions. AI systems can analyze vast amounts of data, make decisions, and provide strategic recommendations in real-time. For instance, AI algorithms are currently used in financial trading to make split-second trading decisions, in healthcare to recommend treatment plans, and in customer service to handle inquiries and provide solutions. This shift from passive tools to active decision-makers means that AI is not just a tool but a partner in the decision-making process. It is like trusting vehicles to automatically apply the brakes when a collision is imminent or to alert nearby drivers when changing lanes. This integration of AI will be incorporated into business operations in much the same way, taking on?progressively?more responsibilities.?

AI as an Ever-Changing Tool:?
People should not view AI as something they will develop internally, any more than they would create their own operating systems or database management software. AI is an ever-evolving tool, with new advancements and updates continuously emerging. Therefore, the critical factor will be the integration of these tools into their environment and how they are managed. Just as businesses rely on external expertise for their core technological infrastructure, they will need to stay adaptable and continuously integrate new AI capabilities to remain competitive.?
Visualizing the Future Organization:?
An organizational chart that integrates both human and AI/IT roles demonstrates how these roles interact and contribute to the organization’s success. What these roles look like are being defined now with job openings being placed by confused HR Recruiters asking for:?
Responsibilities:?
If you are an executive and had no issue with the above job responsibilities then this article is aimed at you.
Conclusion:?
The future of leadership is rapidly evolving with the integration of AI into every facet of business operations. While many direct contributors worry about AI replacing their roles, the challenge and opportunity lie with the executives. Leaders must embrace AI not just as a tool but as a strategic partner that actively participates in decision-making. This new landscape demands a unique combination of skills—those provided by both an MBA and an MS in IT Management.?
Executives equipped with these dual qualifications will be uniquely positioned to lead their organizations through the complexities of AI integration. They will be able to select the right technologies, manage both human and AI assets effectively, and ensure their organizations remain competitive in an ever-changing market. The implementation of AI, like any major technological shift, will require thoughtful planning, ethical considerations, and a willingness to continuously adapt.?
By pursuing continuous education and embracing AI as an integral part of their strategic vision, today’s executives can ensure they not only keep pace with their competitors but also lead the way in innovation and efficiency. The integration of AI is not just a technical upgrade; it is a transformative process that will redefine leadership and organizational success in the machine economy.?
