The urge for purpose

In the dawn of a new year it is easy to turn your focus to the large question, what is my purpose? What do I dream of on top of who I am and what I do right now?

In the winter darkness in the northern hemisphere, my first weeks back at work have been a reflection of just that. A variety of people have reached out to share and discuss about their feelings and thoughts. I feel privileged to have been invited to these spaces of examination and imagination of what’s possible. The urge for meaning and purpose is encouraging and makes me hopeful for the future. Many share the need to feel that they increase their contribution to positive impact for people and the planet. Seeking opportunities to be empathetic leaders and updating your own guiding star is a great exercise. Maybe not an easy one, but many things can guide you.

  • What is important in my everyday life?
  • Which questions/challenges/opportunities do I feel passionate about?
  • What legacy do I want to leave behind?

In the quest for a fulfilling and purpose-driven life, the Theory of Change model can be a valuable framework, providing a structured approach to self-discovery and transformation. This model is often used in the realm of social impact and organizational development but can be equally powerful when applied to personal growth.

The process begins by revisiting your purpose and which overall impact you want to contribute to. What truly ignites your passion and drives you forward? This initial step requires introspection and self-awareness.

Next, you map out the specific changes or milestones required to contribute to that impact. Break down your overarching goal into manageable, actionable steps. It will serve you as a roadmap, guiding you through the selection of what activities you will engage in.

An essential component is identifying the underlying assumptions and beliefs influencing your actions. Challenge these assumptions and assess whether they align with your true values and aspirations. For instance, adjusting your mindset can be a catalyst for profound personal change. Regular reflection and evaluation are integral to the model, ensuring that you keep adapting to evolving circumstances and your own development.

Using the Theory of Change is one way to empower yourself to navigate life with intentionality. As you keep developing your personal journey through life, remember that purpose is not a static destination but a dynamic evolution - a journey enriched by self-discovery and a commitment to positive change.

Thank for you this article, Asa. (The TOC bit was how I framed it for myself a year ago. Was so helpful for me then.)
