Urban Life & Placemaking specialisation – ‘Living in the City programme’ year 3

One of the specialisations in Leisure & Events has the privilege to be able to let students live for 20 weeks in an European city. In smaller teams, the Urban Life & Placemaking third-year students stayed in the cities of Turin, Leipzig, Porto and Sevilla.

This unique programme offers students, instead of a fixed work placement/internship, the opportunity to deep-dive into local cultures to explore possibilities of how to improve urban life. Besides doing research and hosting an international conference about ‘understanding public space’, students also designed an exhibition about so-called ’urban scope’ themes; how do example themes such as storytelling, mobility and gentrification have a role there?

While there, the students are coached by their city coach & are given workshops and sessions online at distance, to facilitate their learning experiences.

Intervention project

Moreover, students collaborated with local communities (and partners) to co-create an intervention that let local communities experience how ‘spaces’ could be transformed into ‘places.’ Can you imagine in what way an unused (public) space can serve people with different needs and motivations? Can you imagine what role leisure can play in improving cities in the longer term? Each city team used their research and creativity to eventually design this intervention. To showcase their work and to round off their 20 weeks of the living-in-the-city program, our city coaches (teachers) visited the different cities to experience their intervention and exhibition on location.
