Urban Greening in Perth: Enhancing Tree Canopy and Sustainability

Baileys are thrilled to learn about the Urban Greening Grant Program, a collaborative effort between the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and WALGA. This initiative aims to expand tree canopy and vegetative cover in high urban heat areas to combat climate change impacts, enhance biodiversity, and improve neighborhood livability.

Perth has long faced challenges in increasing its tree canopy coverage, especially considering its distinction of having the hottest summers in Australia. The need to find solutions for the survival of newly planted trees in such harsh conditions is paramount.

Local nurseries are stepping up, growing millions of trees over the next four years to meet the increased demand for locally grown trees, particularly for projects like the Urban Greening program. This represents significant progress, and Baileys is excited to contribute. However, how can we ensure the establishment and survival of these trees, especially in Perth's brutal summers?

Challenges of planting new trees:

  • Trees grown in nurseries are nurtured under optimal conditions, receiving regular nutrients and daily watering, with growers monitoring them closely.
  • Some trees are cultivated for 3-4 years before being sold, signifying a considerable investment in ensuring their optimal health.
  • Young trees, planted less than 6-8 months ago, lack the root structure to withstand extreme heat, especially when surrounded by concrete, exacerbating the "heat island effect."
  • Perth's sandy soils pose a challenge for new tree survival once they leave the nursery.

Give new trees the best start with Baileys

Drawing on over 20 years of soil testing experience in Western Australia, Baileys technical team has developed the optimal mix for tree planting. Baileys Tree Planting Mix is specifically designed to be used around the root zone, promoting rapid root establishment.

Baileys Tree Planting Mix provides the foundation for healthy trees through:

  • Promoting Root Growth: Red loam and Kaolin clay enhance soil moisture retention and stabilise roots for improved water and nutrient absorption.
  • Enhancing Soil Biology: Biowish introduces beneficial microorganisms, fostering a balanced ecosystem and enhancing nutrient availability.
  • Providing Sustained Nutrient Supply: Controlled-release fertiliser ensures a steady nutrient supply over an extended period.
  • Efficient Water Management: Grosorb wetting agent enhances water penetration and distribution, while water-saving crystals conserve water for sustained hydration.

By incorporating Baileys Tree Planting Mix with existing soil or backfilling, trees receive the best possible start for optimal growth and survival. Baileys Tree Planting Mix is available in Bulk, Bulka Bags and 25L bags.

Let's collaborate to support Urban Greening initiatives and maximise the survival of new trees in Perth. Contact your Baileys territory manager to learn more on (08) 9439 1688.
