Highlights and insights from the 2024 GOGLA forum in Kenya.
The 2024 Global Off-Grid Solar Forum served as a pivotal platform for exploring the intersection of productive use equipment, e-mobility, and the pressing challenges of financing and forex in the off-grid solar sector. The heightened focus on Productive Use Equipment underscores its crucial role in driving economic growth and expanding access to electricity for underserved populations. As the e-mobility sector continues to evolve, the insights shared between solar and mobility stakeholders promise to foster innovation and collaboration, paving the way for a more integrated approach to off-grid solutions.?While significant strides have been made in investment and development, the industry must address the ongoing financing barriers that small and mid- sized companies face. The discussions around forex volatility highlight the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure sustainable growth in diverse markets.?Read more
Three takeaways from this year's IETA Asia Climate Summit.
Restoring Credibility: as expected, at the heart of discussions and presentations is the credibility of the market and the whole carbon credit ecosystem. After a challenging year, project developers and independent crediting programmes are working hard to restore confidence by generating high integrity credits.?
Spotlight on Nature Based Solutions (NBS):?NBS are currently in the spotlight, while less focus is given to projects related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and cookstoves. As investments in clean cooking drop, it will be interesting to see how prominent project developers in that space will move their focus to Agriculture and Forestry.?
NBS needs a robust framework: as focus shifts to NBS solution so should the work around creating a robust framework to enhance transparency. At the heart of the work organisations need to address land and farmer issues.?
In recent weeks, Upya has expanded its suite of data collection tools with the introduction of “Polygon,” enabling onsite land marking, zoning, and geo-fencing capabilities. Visit our blog, for a brief introduction about the Polygon.
Despite challenges, there is no doubt that the Issuance of carbon credits remains a necessary mechanism to the energy transition, the growing focus on NBS is an opportunity for involved stakeholders to get it right and build on that momentum putting in place solid frameworks for transparency, accountability and ultimately investor confidence.

FEATURE HIGHLIGHT
Validation Steps in Data Monitoring: as data is collected about the beneficiaries, the field agent syncs his Upya Mobile App to send off all the data to head office. Upya allows many validation procedures to assure data accuracy before sign-off. When reviewing incoming data, significant issues like “Wrong Picture” “Missing Signature” “Picture not clear” can be identified. Compliance with standards is then ensured by corrective actions. Project developers can tailor these phases to their internal and external processes.
Geofencing: this new feature lets office supervisors define a map region to monitor field staff and limit activity. The supervisor simply pins out an activity area for each ground agent on our map. This generates GPS coordinates for each pin point, allowing the supervisor to track agent sales and after-sales activity. Even better, this feature integrates with Upya's advanced commission module to calculate commissions only if the action occurred within the agent's territory.
