Uptime myths...
It seems to be the flavour of the year with folks writing about myths. Maybe it is caused by stories around Covid-19 with truths and potential myths floating around the internet. Recently there are articles going around seemingly busting myths but one could question whether it is for the reason of truly putting things in the right perspective or whether it serves marketing. I thought that it would therefore be a good idea to highlight the "other side" of the myths surrounding this particular topic. Looking forward to your number 10 myth :)
1. Uptime is an accredited SDO - Standards Development Organization (no they are not)
2. Uptime is an Accredited Certification Body (no they are not)
3. Uptime owns the word Tier and you cannot use the word Tier (no they don't own it and YES you can use the word Tier)
4. Uptime Tier certification makes a good data centre (no it does not, it takes much more than that. Uptime Tier only describes power and cooling. Other aspects such as security, safey, architecture, telcom etc are out of scope of Tier)
5. Uptime Tier certification represents current state of the data centre (No it does not, facility certification has no expiry.... what trust can you have in a, for example, 5-year old certificate?)
6. Uptime has the most active certified data centres (no they do not, most certificates are for design only and have expired, far less data centre facilities are certified....Anybody ever wondered why most data centres do not go from design to facility certification?? Hmmm wonder why....)
7. Uptime audits are independent. (No they are not, they write the guideline, they sell it, they "audit" it and they print their own certificates. There is no independent/impartial accreditation)
8. Uptime Institute’s Tier Standard is the globally recognized standard for data center reliability and overall performance. (No it is not, to their own admission, data centre facilities is only contributing to a smaller portion of overall downtime. Furthermore, Uptime does not guarantee availability of a Tier certified data centre).
9. Uptime Constructed Facility allows you to rest assured knowing there are no unforeseen risks, shortfalls, or weak links in your infrastructure. (No it does not, it only considers power and cooling)
10. Tell me what you think could be the #10 on this list? Share me your myths about Uptime.
