Upstream O&G Industry: Highlights R&D importance and shift towards sustainability
Reviewer Outline: In the following article published in JPT magazine on July, 2023, the authors discuss the grand challenges in technology and R&D for the upstream oil and gas industry. It outlines the findings from a workshop held in 2023, where thought leaders identified five technical challenges: improved recovery from tight/shale resources, net-zero upstream operations, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, and digital transformation. Additionally, a sixth nontechnical challenge was identified – education and advocacy. The challenges encompass a range of issues such as improving recovery from unconventional resources, reducing emissions from operations, developing carbon capture technologies, advancing geothermal energy production, and leveraging digital technologies for industry transformation. The article emphasizes the need to focus R&D and technology efforts on addressing these challenges to benefit both the industry and society.
