Upskilling organizations in Meta-Innovation like Shell, Rolls Royce, Governments and Communities to thrive by implementing Psychological Safety

The Meta-Innovation Matrix is redefining Innovation beyond resource Constraints - Changing the DNA of Innovation for the past 20 years.

I was asked to join a panel on the importance of Psychological safety. My innovation consultancy work at Shell, ABB and Rolls Royce including technology start-ups was entirely relevant because without an environment that welcomed and supported innovation - it is just not possible to innovate. We worked with Shell colleagues around the Globe from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures. There has to be a degree of genuine interaction and respect that would transcend any formal or informal barriers across cultures. Our task was to make this innovation happen, and the reality was a huge success.

What is Psychological Safety?

By targeted integration - it means that individuals feel they can speak up, express ideas, admit mistakes, or ask for help without fearing negative consequences like punishment, ridicule, or rejection. Organizations and Governments that prioritize psychological safety see higher performance metrics, improved stakeholder satisfaction, and a strong, positive culture that attracts top talent. Psychological safety is the cornerstone of a healthy, innovative, and prosperous workplace. It enables teams to communicate openly, take risks, and learn from mistakes, creating an environment where people can thrive and perform at their best.

"Our teams have made powerful decisions using the empowering and empathic Meta-Innovation Matrix process." Tim Nichol, Pro-vice Chancellor. Liverpool John Moores University.

Prior Emotional Intelligence - for Shell and Rolls Royce

At the very beginning, before any form of discussion took place - we wanted emotional intelligence and systems thinking to play a crucial role. This was a topic that invigorated the participants because it enhanced their communication and interpersonal skills. From there we could take the organization to a higher level of collaboration.

When does Innovation happen?

Ok, Innovation doesn't happen in isolation or without psychological safety, but it does happen with organizations that support a diverse and inclusive culture.- that is the conclusion made by neuroscientists who helped us bring together a psychologically safe environment for organizations in the Private and the Public Sector. More recently governments have welcomed an inclusive psychological well-being culture.

Empathic Leadership

There is a disconnect between what one considers true health, education and well-being in the workplace - and the reality itself. Empathic leadership can and does lead to an aspirational environment that is conducive to well-being, transparency and cordial relationships.

Well-Being and Safety?

The implications of not inducing psychological safety are far-reaching and impact innovation, profitability as well as organizational dynamics. Investing in the well-being of the next generation is not just a moral obligation but a strategic move to secure a prosperous and harmonious future for all people everywhere. By treating children with compassion and wisdom, we lay the foundation for a healthier, more innovative, and more equitable world. This, in turn, ensures the survival and advancement of humanity, creating a legacy of care and stewardship for generations to come. Why not?

Psychological Safety - The Missing Link - Waking up

Lack of psychological safety contributes to stress. This can lead to decreased job satisfaction and increased turnover. Healthcare faces unique challenges in balancing safety protocols with patient-centered care. Creating psychological safety in the workplace parallels the nurturing of the workforce and reduces burnout. By fostering an environment of trust, open communication, and support, organizations can enhance innovation, team performance, employee engagement, and overall well-being. This approach not only benefits the individuals within the organization but also contributes to a more dynamic, resilient, and successful workplace.

Fear of Punishment, burnout risk and patients' well-being and health are at stake.

Culture is key

It is only by emulating a trusting culture and nurturing environment that we can make the future a more promising place to live and work.

Psychological safety is crucial for personal and company growth.

Loved spotting this today John. There hasn't been a time when we have needed this more. All of the research shows us that empathy builds and grows teams and is never a hindrance. In fact organisations with higher empathy and understanding for their teams experience 23% higher profit and 17% higher effectiveness. In the end, our teams are made up of people and if we don't understand them, how do we ever expect to lead them?

Advanced Governments understand the importance of Systems Thinking and Emotional Intelligence alongside Psychological Safety and are now following Leaders in the Private Sector like Space X, and Shell.
