Upskilling in HR is critical—AI and other tech demands it

This week, we offer you the 14th installment of our HR Predictions for 2024: Imperatives for the Year Ahead series. In this prediction, the topic of upskilling is focused specifically on those in HR roles.

Prediction #14: Building HR skills and capabilities will become a top priority. HR teams will need to develop their skills and capabilities to navigate the changes brought on by AI and other emerging technologies.

As part of the work we do at the Academy, we've launched major studies that resulted in several key data points:?

  • In 2019, we detailed 92 different business capabilities in HR.
  • Today, the list of business capabilities has expanded to 98.
  • Since 2018, the number of HR roles has increased by 25% (250+ roles).
  • In the same period of time, the number of in-depth HR skills has grown by 33% (400+ skills).

These numbers point to the astronomical growth of the HR field. The new roles are more strategic, cross-functional, and complex, implying that HR practitioners and business leaders are being asked to step up their game.

Just as professionals in other fields of work—engineers, sales, IT, and more—are expected to stay on top of trends and emerging technologies, it is imperative that HR practitioners and leaders do the same.

That is where the Academy comes in. The Academy was built from the ground up to provide HR practitioners with the development solutions they need to expand their skills and capabilities.

For HR leaders, the experts at the Academy recommend the following to support HR team development:

  • The average spending on L&D across all roles is around $1,500 per person per year. Allocate this sum to HR as well.
  • Ask your HR team to rotate across disciplines: move recruiters into L&D and vice versa.
  • Start a proactive HR career program that encourages HR professionals to move into the business, specialist roles, and business partner roles.
  • Enroll your HR team in the company’s leadership development and industry education.
  • Strongly suggest every HR professional attend at least one external conference in their domain.?
  • Partner with another peer organization to compare your HR strategic plans and challenges.
  • Call us to review the systemic HR model with your leadership team.?

The Academy's resources and courses can help you learn more about the Systemic HR? system. Ideal courses to build this knowledge include The Strategic HR Business Partner and Change Agility , plus resources and tools, including The Journey to Systemic HR? , JBC Insights: Systemic HR? , and JBC Insights: The Journey to Agile .
