UPSET SUMMARY WEEK 12

This week’s upset summary. Top 25 teams defeated: #9, #12, #16, 20
I warned you in my last UPSETs note that it didn’t look like a big week for upsets and we had the lowest number all season…. but we had some crazy close calls.
Congrats go out to my beloved Georgia Tech Yellowjackets for an OT win against UVA.
UPSETS of top rated teams.
#9: West Virginia lead Oklahoma State in Stillwater much of the game but the Cowboys came back leading 45-41 with 2 seconds left. W. Virginia’s pass to a receiver in the end one broken up and the COWBOYS win after their heartbreaker with OU last week.
#12 Remember: I don’t tell you to bet very often. But last week I said to bet on #3 Notre Dame against Syracuse. And you could have given the points and cleaned up.
#16 Iowa State on the road at #15. Losing this wasn’t an upset of course.
#20 Well, as predicted by yours truly, FSU would give BC a tough time. And they wound up beating Boston College 22-21.
Florida State astonishingly defeats Boston College…which I predicted earlier this week.
I also predicted #24 Cincinnati would upset #11 UCF. I WAS WRONG and how. UCF dominated and now they will whine constantly about not being considered for the national championship. They still have to play USF, an unranked team, but their second opponent with a winning record. I like Cincinatti mainly BECAUSE THEIR HELMETS HAVE THE CHICK-FIL-A logo.
I predicted TX A&M would win but not cover the spread against UAB. But they did. Again. Gig’em.
CRAZY CLOSE CALLS
Anyone watching Maryland and #10 Ohio State could see OSU was behind the whole game. Maryland was impressive given their now 5-6 record and deserved to win and would have—but for unsuccessfully going for 2 in OT. Wow. My favorite game of the day. 52-51 Ohio State.
Indiana played Michigan closer than a 5-6 team should have been able to but now the OSU Michigan winner will face Northwestern. Assuming NWrn doesn’t pull the upset, Big 10 fans will be screaming to get that team into the playoffs.
Colorado State NEARLY upset #23 Utah State….in fact the scoreboard showed the winning points briefly but the receiver had stepped out of bounds and the TD (and win) were called back.
I told you The Citadel would not beat Alabama but anyone watching the first half might have doubted me. It was tied at the half but as expected, Alabama blew them out.
VERY minor upsets of little interest to non-partisans but nonetheless interesting games —sort of.
Ball State hosted Western Michigan Tuesday. Coming into the game, WMU was 6-4 and Ball State was 3-7 but remember one of those Ball State losses was against Notre Dame. Well, continuing a trend, Ball State had the opportunity in OT to go for 2 and made for a dramatic victory. It took a near perfect night for the Ball State QB…WMU ran for 361 yards while Ball ran for 67.
FINAL DIATRIBE
Congrats to Princeton, now 10-0 with its first perfect season since 1964. Frankly I wish a real Bowl would pick these guys instead of some of the mediocre 6-5 teams who will get Bowl invitations. Remember, the Ivy League gave us the line of scrimmage, cut the number of players on the field from 15 to 11, established the modern 4-down system, creating the huddle, the onside kick, the unbalanced line, motion and the Statue of Liberty play. This is where modern football came from. It’s time for the Ivy Leagues to consider postseason play. Heck, they don’t even compete against FCS teams in the playoffs. Last week they were ranked 9th in the FCS rankings I am sure Princeton could clobber Weber State or Eastern Washington …I want them in the Peach Bowl!
SHOUT OUT TO TONY
See, I told you Duke didn’t stand a chance.
