Uplifting News: A New Vehicle Shows How Boeing Is Reimagining Flight
Hopefully you caught word about Boeing unveiling a unique prototype aircraft that shows how we see our markets evolving.
We introduced a remote-controlled, electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft that's the first step toward us creating an unmanned cargo air vehicle (CAV). This isn’t your ordinary drone – this 750-pound beast is 15 feet long, 18 feet wide and 4 feet tall, and it has eight counter-rotating propeller blades and custom batteries that allow for vertical flight. We designed and built it fast, and learned a lot, which will help us as we continue to mature the design of these vehicles.
This work is a big deal because it's our latest breakthrough in leveraging promising technologies that will let us reimagine transport. Because we believe the demand for faster delivery of cargo will increase, unmanned aircraft like this could offer a solution for transporting time-sensitive cargos of up to 500 pounds, as well as conducting autonomous missions in remote or dangerous areas.

The work done on this prototype, as well as the efforts at Aurora Flight Sciences – a Boeing subsidiary that's developing an eVTOL passenger air vehicle – shows we're changing the future of transportation, and changing the world.
While interesting as a demonstrator, this design has one significant weakness: the energy density of lithium ion batteries (0.36–0.875 MJ/kg) is a mere fraction of the energy density of jet fuel or gasoline (46.4 MJ/kg) limiting both lift and range. Electric power is essential because it can be used to precisely control and maneuver the aircraft. Combustion engine power cannot be controlled with such precision. Design of a hybrid platform requires a design that compensates for torque and thrust generated by a combustion engine among other considerations. It's not clear what new technology or capability has been developed, introduced, or incorporated into this aircraft.?
