Upgrade Reality 2023: Scaling the Future with NTT Research

Upgrade 2023; the NTT Research Summit focused on scaling an idea to innovation: from beginnings in basic research, proof of concept, and prototyping, to expanding reach so it can change the world. The summit showcased some of today's most cutting-edge innovations that were merely ideas a short time ago. The event's foundational theme was “Scaling the Future,” with a focus on the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN), which was made even more prominent by the announcement, on March 16th, of NTT's first IOWN-related service, All-Photonics Network (APN) IOWN 1.0.

The First IOWN Commercial Service

This inaugural IOWN high-speed broadband access service adds an optical channel transport unit 4 (OTU4) interface to the currently available 100Gbps (type 1) service. The company also started selling "OTN Anywhere", a terminal device equipped with delay visualization and adjustment functions. Shortly after that, the company sponsored an e-sports demonstration event ("Open New Gate for esports 2023-The future of e-sports created by IOWN") and a live multipoint comedy and entertainment event ("Future Comedy Live !!").

IOWN is a new communication infrastructure that provides high-speed broadband communication and enormous computing resources using many innovative technologies. These innovative technologies can also optimize access and use of all types of information by individuals and society. The full realization of IOWN capabilities is targeted for 2030. The following components are in the final platform:

  • The "All-Photonics Network," which uses photonics-based technology on everything from networks to terminals;
  • "Digital Twin Computing" will be capable of "predicting the future" by combining real-world data with digital world simulations; and
  • A "Cognitive Foundation?" that connects and controls everything.

NTT Basic Research

NTT R&D focuses on servicing all of humankind. They aim to upgrade global society's reality in game-changing ways that improve individual lives and brighten our global future. In their eyes, fundamental research has that power, so their mission is to conduct primary research and advance the technologies that become second nature to us all so they can best promote positive change for humankind. Primary research is the start of our journey into the future, and Upgrade Reality 2023 presented some fantastic examples of singularly brilliant ideas that could change everything.

?I was personally honored to have the opportunity to interview some of the organization's leaders. The clear-eyed vision and contagious enthusiasm in their work are apparent in the short excerpts shared below:

Dr. Jon Peterson is a Senior Medical & Health Informatics (MEI) Laboratories Research Scientist. That group applies bioinformatics and data science to medical research. With a vision to facilitate improved health outcomes, MEI Lab advances the medical and health sciences by empowering the application of a more Personalized, Preventive, Predictive, and Participatory (i.e., "P4") practice of medicine and wellness. We aim to individualize and revolutionize healthcare by applying bio-digital twin technologies to achieve precision medicine. This interview provides an update on the progress of the cardiovascular (CV) biology digital twin and what the technology will mean for the future of health.

Dr. Elette Boyle, from the Cryptography & Information Security (CIS) Laboratories, focuses on making data secure. That organization's goal is to attain a more secure future for everyone by becoming the premier cryptography research laboratory in the world. She and I discussed her presentation on privacy-preserving aggregate statistics for business.

Dr. Yoshihisa Yamamoto, Director of NTT Research Physics & Informatics Laboratories (PHI), leads an organization that blends quantum physics with brain science on an optical platform. They aim to build simple, efficient, practical solvers for real-world problems in our information-intensive society. This goal is accomplished by using computers to solve combinatorial/continuous optimization problems, conducting quantum simulations of many body systems, and through deep machine learning. Dr. Yamamoto describes how the lab compares a Coherent Ising Machine (CIM) based on a degenerate optical parametric oscillator network against other quantum computing methodologies. He also provided an overview of future integrated photonics use cases.

NTT Research President and CEO Kazuhiro Gomi provide an Upgrade 2023 overview. He also explains how the event reflects NTT's R&D commitment. NTT Research is rising at the right time and in the right place with a mission to upgrade reality in game-changing ways.

Beyond IOWN

These interviews provide excellent insight into the value of NTT's basic research. Please visit the Upgrade Reality 2023 event website to hear how other brilliant humans are working hard to optimize access and use of all types of information by individuals to benefit our global society.

Pt. I: Basic Research

?????Paul Rand; Joe Alexander, Jr.; Juan de Pablo; Al Emondi

?????How do we avoid stagnation and foster innovation? Can we promote the freedom to explore and accept the failure inherent in being on the cutting edge? And does emphasizing fundamental research create an environment that champions discovery, produces more novel solutions, and spurs innovation?

Pt 2 - Go To Market

?????Paul Rand, Dan Boneh, Vab Goel, Shahid Ahmed, Giorgio Scarpelli

?????The journey of ideas in the post-basic-research world, from proof of concept and prototyping to going to market and expanding reach so they can change the world.

Privacy-Preserving Aggregate Statistics

?????Elette Boyle

?????How can a modern business meet the challenge of gathering necessary aggregate user statistics without being exposed to the personal data of individuals?

Probabilistic Estimation of Cardiovascular Bio Digital Twin Parameters

  • Iris Shelly
  • The Cardiovascular Bio Digital Twin project aims to realize precision cardiology though the development of patient-specific digital twins. While the fundamental framework for each twin is a mechanistic model of cardiovascular physiology, an individual patient’s cardiovascular system is a unique and complex interaction of many variables.
