From Apollo to AI: The Evolution of Digital Twins in Geospatial Innovation
Despite rocketing to buzzword status in the geospatial realm, the digital twin is not a new idea. In fact, the idea was first developed by NASA?in the 1960s to help save the Apollo 13 crew by duplicating processes in the digital environment to then deploy in the real world. But much has changed since those early days.

A digital twin is still a virtual environment that represents real space. However, the concept takes on new life with technological advances, mass data collection capabilities from real-time sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI)?and machine learning.
In particular, the evolution of the internet of things IoT?is helping transform digital twins into “living” (and adapting) digital environments with important uses in the real world, such as production line analysis and smart city simulations to solve urban challenges.
When supported by connected sensors, digital twins can even become intelligent reflections of physical things in motion, duplicating physical orientation, shape, position, gesture or motion.
Sophisticated digital twins have also begun to use AI and machine learning algorithms for predictive learning.
For instance, one of the possible uses of a digital twin is to virtually track the real-time movement of materials through a supply chain with help from IoT sensors. With AI and machine learning, that same system can now support process improvements.

Introducing Trimble Access Software v2024.00
Built to make a surveyor’s job easier
Trimble is excited to introduce the latest version of Trimble??Access??field software, version 2024.00. This release brings practical enhancements in four key areas, aimed at simplifying key surveying tasks for greater efficiency and ease of use:
Revolutionising Surveying: AI and Machine Learning Innovations in Geospatial Data Collection
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technology continues to impact nearly every aspect of our daily lives, and surveying is no exception. According to this Engineering(.com) article, “Time-tested methods of collecting geospatial data for infrastructure and other engineering projects are being turned upside down by new products that lean heavily on AI and ML. Three recent developments provide a glimpse into the intense activity in new survey data collection and extraction.”
